YULETIDE FEAST IS
CELEBRATED AT SEA
Passengers On Alameda
Are Entertained
Royally
Her cabin fragrant with the odor
ot pines and her passengers merry
with the spirit of the season, 'the
Oceanic steamer Alamodn, "tlio old
reliable," entered the Inner harbor
shortly after 7 o'clock and mado (ant
at her berth at the Oceanic wharf.
Coming on Christmas morning, the
Alameda brought Christmas cheer
and her festive garb was appropriate
to the occasion. Decorated with pine.
and mistletoe and her decks lined
with happy-faced passengers holding
wreaths and sprigs of holly In their
hands, the vessel, as she ncared the
wharf, teemed like a messenger of
Yuletldc, sent here from the land
across the sea.
Saturda) night was the gala occa
sion on hoard the ship. Christmas
eve was celebrated with traditional
cheer, nnd any homesickness on the
pait of the passengers wus quickly
dispelled.
A more sumptuous spread than the
Christmas eve dinner could not be
found anywhere. Chief Steward Car
leton had full charge of the arrange
ments, and he proved himself a past
master of his art. There was as long
and elaborate u menjl ns any Fifth
avenue chef ever arranged fur n fes
tal banquet, und all ot tho little cus
toms which lire associated with the
season were carefully observed.
Hut there was one teatu.ro of the
celebration that will not be forgotten
soon by any of the passengers. That
was the Christmas tree. It was plac
ed in the ladies' saloon, oer the ba
rony, 6o that It was visible either
fiom the decks or from the dlnlug
saloon below. And It wus a real
Christmas tree, not papier-mache af
fair of faded gree.and shoddy tlnsle.
Tho deflcate odor of tho dainty
pine tilled xthe entire saloon, white
the soft glow' of the myriad ot tiny.
partl-colored electric lights, which of
necessity took the place of candles,
shed a mystic cloud of light over the
assembled guests.
