l(.n Campbell wns then called upon
to give his Illustrated talk on the
water supply of tho city.
Importance of Water Supply
"llicio Is nnthlng-whlcii ho direct
ly nrfects tho health, wclfaio, and
prosperity of a city as Its wnter sup
ply," ho began. "Tho present con
sumption of water In Honolulu Is np
pioxlmiitely, as nearly ns we can
niensuie It, 14, .100,000 gallons every
21 hours. With a population of,
roughly, 50,000 this means that wo
have. In proportion, the largest wnter
consumption of nny city in the Unit
ed States or lJurope. San Francisco
iispj only from 32,000,000, to .10,000,
000 gallons per day. Practically tho
tntnl supply hero Is used for domestic
nnd Irrigation purposes. This Is a
MMiil-tropIc country nnd tho con
sumption nnd requirements lire ncces.
snrlly higher hero than anywheio
cite. Wo iiso from 350 to 400 gallons
per capita each day. Tho point of nil
this Is that we must do something
to add to tho supply nnd Improve tho
qunllty of our water.
I'aw Paw, Jllch. " I suffered terrl-
mation and conges
tion, for several
years. Aly doctor
said there was no
liopo for me but an
operatluu. I began
taking J. ilia K.

I can now say I am

Alvi:na Spehling, 11 Langdon St,
Lydla K. l'Inkham's Vegetable Com

ban proved to bo tho most successful
remedy for curing tho worst forms of
female. Ills, including displacements,
intlnimuutiou, ilbrold tumors. Irregu.
lurlties, periodic pitlus, backache, bear-Ing-dowu
feeling, flatulency, Indiges
tion, and nervous prostration. It costs
but a trifle to try It. and the result
has been worth millions to many
Buffering women. ,
Nuuanu Waters Bad
"Any physician In the city will tell
jou that tho stored wnters of Nuuanu
nro not fit for human consumption
unless thoy nro fllterbd. Theru Is
considerable, tropical growth In tho
valley shrubs which grow quickly
nnd decay equally fast. This, while
not particularly dangerous, stains tho
wnter and renders It disagreeable to
use It. In addition, tho main roud
of travel from Honolulu to Knneoho
Is nlong tho valley nnd over the Pali.
Tho drnlnngo from this road of ne
cessity flows Intothe Nuuanu lener
olr$. "These Islands stnnd ns n buffer,
In health as well us otliorwUe. ha-
'tween tho Orient and tile mainland.
Ninety per1 cent, of the trnel from
the Orient to tlio Islands visits the
Pall, going over that road. One per
son with typhoid or cholera could
contaminate the entire water supply
of the city.
"This would bo far different with
tho right kind of a filtration plant.
Filtration Is n bucccss only to tho
point of its perfect control. A fail
ure means worse water than that noty
entering tho reservoir. Tho gieat
question now Is what to do."
Illustrating his -emarks with 1. in
tern pictures showing. tho NuUiiuu
dun; In Its various stages of construc
tion, Mr. Campbell showed what has
nlicjdy been done, and pointed out
tho Important part which 'the big
flam must play In tho future Of Hono
lulu's wnter supply.. "Wo occupy a
unique position here," he continued,
"us we have a most excellent natural
nitration system. Wliy create an
artificial sjstem which will cost a
vast sum of money? Why not take
advantage of tho natural supply of
pure waters that have passed through
Nnturo's filters? Tho ndvnntngo of
this, system Is that not ono more em
ploye, Is needed than at present In
tho pumps. And wo will take the
contaminated waters of Nuuanu nnd
convert them Into puro wnter. Wo
rnn hnvo 21.000,000 gallons of water
fiom Nuuanu. It Is simply n propo
sition of converting that energy from
nasty water to puro water from 1000
Mr. Cnnipbe)! did not nttempt to
glvo any accurate cstimnto of the
cr.st of tho proposed plant, explain
ing that the figures would be glcn
to the Legislature by Governor Fie.ir,
but ho did make tho statement that
tho rust would not bo one-half that
of n filtration plant to filter 7,,bvu.o0i)
gallons of water per day.' !
Water Works Outgrown
"lo get tlio Mipply or waters to
the citizens Is tho next question, " tho
speaker continued. Tho Honolulu
wnter works Is u growth. In this it
Is no different from that of ncfirly sv
cry other municipality. Tlio pipe syx

"The pipe system Is entirely too
small. Wo must reconstruct tho en
tire system of mains, get a coordinat
ed system of nil tho pumps In Hono
lulu. At present In tho mlddla of tho
day it is almost Impossible to got wa
ter to thu upper stiny of tho Mc
Cmidlcss building or tho lloston
block. This is duo to the small sbu
of tho mains. Hut by reconstructing
the main system we could put wuter
to the top of the tallest building that
will ever be constructed.
Meter System Best
"You would bo surprised to know
how little this cntlrti system would
cost, lly making tho man who
wastes, water pay for It wo can make
the entire system self-supporting. It
amounts to this: water is a commnd.
lly. Tho ;nlnito a man has to pay
fur what ho wastes, ho doesn't wate,
That menus u meter systcpi. Cities
that have, a meter system show that
that system means less cost to he

We must take Into consideration that

Superintendent Campbell conclud

the iusurnnco men hnvo said that If
the proposed sjsteni Is carried out. It
will materially reducu tho premiums,
