Tho general meeting was well at

Tho special committco on trndo anil

two gentlemen had looked Into the
matter carefully, and had tried to ob

bell, his Ideas ot a remedy for tho
present stato of affairs. Tho report
concludes as follows:
"Wo find that a number of firms
And Individuals aro not paying tho

It appears.
"We would suggest that a special
legislative committee, be appointed to
look Into the existing licenso and tax
laws, whoso further duty It would bo

forty commission merchants horo only
seven have paid tholr licenso fee for
doing business $100 each; and that
tho Government Is losing any amount
of money by not collecting such
fees." -
Mr. Paris said that Sonator Chll

suggestions for the legalization hud
come from some sources, und sug
gested that, if legalized, the bill
should designate for what specific
purpcu; the money shall be devoted.
Paris stated that It would only he a
matter of time till somo merchant
would refuse to pay tho tnx.
Mr, Petrlo of, Ciiktlo & Cooko said
tho wharf tax nmountod to $1!,000
per annum. As far ns ho know, tho
only ones evading It wcro tho coal
find lumber people. The conl people
oujcci to paying tne tax, as the value,
of their goods Is so small in compar
ison to its bulk. Thoy consider thnt
It Is unjust that thoy Bhould pay that
tax pc"r ton, ns coal Is only worth
about $2, when a sniull package of
merchandise worth, perhaps, $1000,
would only bo liable for the ten
cent tax,
Mr. Angus of Davles & Ci. was op
posed to legalizing the tax, us that
would result in tho money being put
Into tho public Treasury, and then
It would "bo squandered."
Mr. von llainm thought It best to
Icnvo things na they nro. Tho money
wns of great uso In fighting epi
demics, and If tho coin was locked
up In tho Treasury, It would bo hard
to get It out when required.
Mr. Lucas of May & Co. did not
think tho tnx equable, and certainly
noT'when applied lo tho grocery busi
ness. Tho coal nnd lumber men
could easily ndd. ten cents to u ton
of coal, and mako tho consumer pay
It, but In tho grocery business It was
difficult to do this. Consequently his
firm was paying from $B0 to $100
per month out of their own pockots.
Mr. Hlggs said that If tho Govern
ment officials would enforce tho law
properly thoy could collect n vnBt
amount of monoy thnt would be very
acceptable Just at present. Mr. King
remarked that tho Inw was weak, but
Mr. Rlggs said that whb not tho trou
ble tho law was all right, but tho
weakness lay In tho propor enforce
ment of It.
