Tbeie was n large gatheilng nt
the I'nlvetslty Club lust night to
hear tho lecture of Dr. Tempest Ali-
deiHin of York, England, on "West
Indian Volcanoes." The Doctor
hnndled hfs subject In n masterly
and comprehensive fashion and
proved himself a geologist and sci
entist of high Btnudlng, as well ns
an Intrepid mountaineer. Ho wan
enabled to graphically demonstrnto
his Wonderful experiences by means
of stereoptlcal views thrown upon
the screen fiom photographs whlcU
hi often secured with the creat-
cst, difficulty and danger.1
He commenced his lecture by tell
ing nf his visit to Sonfrlcre, which
was In eruption lu 1902, He show
ed a view of the northwest end of
the Island of St. Vincent, explained
the formation of the ground, Its bnl-
saltlc properties, and showed tho
belt of mountains, nil volcanic, and
always more or less In action.
Ho then came to Sonfrlcre Itself,
the crater of which was one lnllo
In diameter, and, showing n large
verlrs of views, ho explained tho
tnnges of the volcanic eruption.
How tho hot ashes and rubbish
formed n crust on tho mnuntnln
nnd the ground In tho Immediate,
vicinity nnd how tho lava seared tho
mountain sides. Ho told of how tho
consolidated lava ('formed Itself Into I
n maimm Known ns "tun, nnu
also told of how the hot 'ashes fall
ing upon tho river caused steam
eruptions. Ho showed a bplciulld
view of this taken from tho sen nt
the mouth of tho river. His visit In
1902 was extremely unfortunate In
that It tallied,, nearly nil the time.
They had. however, one dry day,
anil they accordingly madu the as
cent Whilst nt the crater It com
menced to rnlu cry heavily, which
made their descent very, difficult, ns
they were unable to emss tho
streams. The guides secured two
tree trunks, and by sti etching them
a clous wcrp able to proceed. On
olio occasion tho Doctor had n very
narrow escape. Ho stopped behind
to get a photograph, which ho
bhnwed to tho audience, andihardly
had ho crossed on tho treoi trunks
wjien'thc water camo down In great
tolumc and washed away tho trees.
Ho then showed howqulckly nn
lure healed tho wounds inflicted by
the hot ash which devastated nit
vegetation; how tho burned roots
soon forced their wny through tho
fresh deposits, and In n .compara
tively short spaco of time luxuriant
beds of ferns and creeping vines
Tho Doctor tlicn spoko of his visit
to Santa Maria In Guatemala. Ho
said that current periodicals bad
taken but scant not If o of the erup
tion of 1902, possibly becauso thcio
was comparatively little loss of Ufa
or property, whereas It had been
one of the greatest eruptions of
modem times. Tho crater was sov;
cn-elghlhs of n mile long nnd (Ue-
elghths of n mile wide, nnd It went
to n depth of 7,000 feet.
Tho Doctor concluded his lecture
with if graphic account of his visit
to Mount I'cleo whilst in eruption,
in 1902. lie said that they could
get no steamboat to take them
within any reasonable distance of
tho volcano, nnd they accordingly
hired u small qloop und anchored
off I.e Cnrhet. On tho day that they
had mndo up their minds to at
tempt an ascent l'elce beenmo actlvo
and mo n n great cloud was blowing
towards them. Up anchor and set
sail was thelr only, safety. This
was accordingly done, but, though
thify made good speed, t)io cloud
steadily gained on them. Prepara
tion wereNmado .to sell their liven
dearly, Towels nnd clothes werol
soaked In cold water, and nil on
board the sloop awaited tho oncom
ing' cloud. They could sco flushes
of lightning In all directions; tho?
tould see the clouds of steam aris
ing from the sen ns the hot nshes
dropped therein. The hot, nsh-laden
cloud steadily advanced, when,
within 100 ynrds from tho sloop, it
suddenly lose until it was oxactly
over them nt a holght of about 200
feet, Tim diopplng ash then proved
to bo cold, and all wcro rclloved to
know that tlloy wcro out of danger
and glad of their providential es
cape. Tho Doctor showed boiuo splendid i
views of tho mined town of St.
Pierre, which was destroyed n few
weeks previously by tho Illvlero
lllnncho overflowing Its banks, Tho
Illvlero Illancho runs right up to
tho crack of the mountain, and when
It became actlvo tho lava poured
down this Bticani, raining It to over-
flow with consequent ilest.'iietloil.

to a query put to him by n Hullo

main difference was that tho West
