report filed by Dr. Norgaard, Terri
torial veterinarian, at the meeting
of the Hoard ot Agriculture and
As a result it wag decided to send
out n circular letter to all steam
ship company agents, calling their
attention to the rules. Tho letter
sajB in part:
"I would especially call your nt
tention to the first paragraph of
Rule 1, which requires' that the in
specting ofllcer bo furnished a list,
Immediately upon arrival of any
ship, of all livestock, including poul
try' and dogs, Intended for landing
In the Territory, and whether listed
on 'tho manifest or not.
'You are further requested to
urge the commanding officer bf any
vessel of the companies which ou
represent not to accept for shipment
any horse, stock, cattle, sheep or
swine unless the same are accompa
nied by the requlslto certificate as
specified In the rules of this board.
'Any violation 'of this rule will
necessitate the refusal of a landing
permit and the return of the animals
to.the port whence they came."
pr. Norgaard reported that ono
case of typical glanders had been
discovered during tho month nnd
that the animal had 'been destroy
ed! He also reported that It had
been found that some of the chick
ens in Hawaii are afflicted with an
eyeworm disease, which wit) be
dealt with futly in tho annual re
port of the office.
II. N. Newell, the entomological
inspector at Hllo, reported that ho
was taking a stand against the Im
portation 'of dirty 'potatoes, declar
ing that the dirt sometimes gate a
presentable appearance to potatoes
that were unfit! for use.
Entomologist Elrnhorn made a re
port on the liberation of ladybugs
in the Territory, The report states:
("My attempt to secure a large
comygnmetnt of aph!( eating lady
bags from California was a' success,
for on February 18 I received, a
large ventilated box with about 24,-
400 Hlppodamla convergens, which

delivered to me personally by Mr.

through here on his way to tho Ori
ent. The Insects were In very good
condition, and of the large numbe'r
only about 1500 had died on the
way. This ladybug has been Intro
duced here before, but as far as
search has been made has never been
found. As I understand, from those
who ought to know, the numbers
sent wero in small lots, and I there
fore undertook the. matter of mak
ing a large trial and liberating tnou-
sands in one 'place. I have asked
tor another sending 'of same size and
hone to get these in as good condi
tion. My idea is to liberate these
In the same localities so as to re
inforce those already in the 'held.

of the large quantity In this list
place was for the' purpose ot allow
ing tho flight up'thls valley to the
idp of the mountains, should the in
sects care to follow their California
habits. The bad weather ''and Un
certainty ot localities on the other
Islands than Kauai did not permit
the distribution to them' from this
lot. However, should the introduc
tion prove successful, it would be a
very easy matter to secure largo
quantities in tho future."
