Commander of the Japanese Navy Sub

Left Letter Telling Herolo 8tory.
VICTORIA, B. C, Juno 10. Japan
has added to her roll of heroes the
name of Commander Sakuma of Sub
marine No. 6 of tho Imperial navy.
Thp cable has briefly told of the
sinking of Submarlno No. 6 while en
gaged In manoeuvre with the Japan

sage from tho dead which tho 'salvers

I havo no oxctiso or apology for

discharged their own dutlos until the
Iqst moments. We now die tor the

"Wo were making a gasollno dive

"It reached the bed of tho ocean on
which It stood with a list of 13 do-
grves. As tho water submerged the
electric generator tho light was ex
tinguished end tho electric wlros fus
ed. At the same time a noxious gas
was generated, which made rcsplra
tlon very difficult.
"It was at about 10 a. m. on April
15 that tho submarine sank. Envoi-
oped by tho noxious gas the crew 'en
deavored to pump out tho water.
"When we prepared to take the dive
the water In tho man tank, was
promptly pumped out. Although the
.gauge was Invisible., owing to the
electric light having failed, It Is rec
ognised that tho water In the main
tank was completely exhausted. Tho
cectrlc current has entirety failed us
apd wo aro also unable our only hope

("I write this by tho light coming
through tho conning tower at 11:45

"Tbo majority of the crew aro satu

ly cold. I had many times nrgued
that men cjigaged In submarine work
must possess the qualities of coolness
and prudence, and, that unloss thoy
act entirely without thought ot self
the development of submarines can
not bo effected. People may scoff at
this warning of tho disaster, but I
firmly believe- that my statement will
be found correct.
"The depth motor Installed In tho
conning tower now Indicates 62 de
grees. Wo havo worked hard to
pump out tho water, but tho boat re
mains in (bp same position.
Cfew of Cool. Brave Men.
"The depth of water here Is bolley-
ci to bo about ten fathoms. The
cr w of a submarine snouia do se
lected from among men of the very
highest ability, as they will be useful
at n time of such disaster. Fortun
ately my crew aro all doing their
bemt. I am contented with this.
"I nm always prepared for death
when I nm away from home. My will
Is therefore In the locker. This Is,
however, of my private affairs, and
there Js no. necessity to announco It
here. I only hoe Mr. Taguchl will
