The Government Will Tender Sub

WASHINGTON Thcro Is profit In
raising hglh grade seed. Seed crops of
sweet corn, garden pens and beans of
good nuallty nro in over-lncieasing
demand, and the quantity needed
j early has become m large that tho
stcdman is obliged to have the, major
portion of his slock ginwu forliliii hy
others. Within the past few jcara
thcro has bcon an enormous Increase
In the ntinnttty of secdi produced for
commercial purposes. This has been
duo In largo measure to the develop
ment of seed growing nnd handling
as a business. There are now nearly
1000 cced flrms doing business In the
United States. Ono of the largest of
these uses buildings with an aggre
gate door space of nioro than 1C acres.
This space Is much larger than was
occupied by the entire seed trade of
tho country only r.o years ago. Tho
quality has also vitally Improved.
The farinir who contemplates un
dertaking seed crop farming will do
well to consider thoroughly the many
elements which enter Into profits.
Seedmcn lire often ahlo to pluco con
tracts for growing seed at very low
prices even lower than that nt which
grain of the species can bo sold on
the market. Such a condition might
be duo to any of several causes, but
usually rests on an over supply or a
demand for an Inferior product Tho
general tendency now, however, is de
cidedly In the other direction, and
both seed dealers and Bced growers
can do much by co-operation to fur
ther this tendency.
In response to a demand for greater
knowledge of the cultural methods
which are best adapted to seed grow
ing for the vegetables mentioned, tho
United States Department of Agri
culture has Just issued 11 new publi
cation, bulletin 184 of tho bureau of
plant Industry, under the tltlo "The
Production of Vegctablo Seeds:
Sweet Corn, (larilen Peas, nnd Ileaiis."
This publication discusses this whole
subject very thoroughly mid gives In
structions for securing crops of seeds
for these dltferent species.
