THE VOTO GETTER
When the ten-trip, contest was put on
Says Mary Ann, "As sur'e's you're born
I'll capture one of those trips to the coast;
Of my vote-getting powers I'm prone to boast."
So, to her room she climbed the stair,
For the battle of ballots to prepare.
"If in that contest I take part,
I must dress to capture the masculine heart."
She first tried on a dress of blue.
Then thought that it would never do.
"To gather votes," she mused, "I guess
I ought to wear a sober dress.
"I'll have one made this coming week,
And then the Contest votes I'll seek."
Two weeks were gone, more or less,
And nary showing of the new dress. v
Quoth she, "that new piijk gown's too light, .
'Twould make me look a perfect fright."
Another week she spent in thought
Regarding what she thought she ought
To wear, while out in search of tips,
To give ficr a cinch on B u 1 1 e t i n trips.
"I know what I'll do, I'll phone to Bess,
And havcher tell what kind of a dress
She's going to wear in contest work,"
And. she grabbed the "receiver" with a jerk.
She put the question over the phone,
Then came the answer with a groan:
"I really don't know what to wear;
The girl is doing up my hair.
I say, Mary Ann, that trip to the coast
Above alf things I desire most;
And I'm going to start in pretty soon,
Say about next Monday afternoon."
Another week or so went by.
When Mary Ann thought she'd have a try
At getting enough votes from business men
For a place in that lucky bunch of ten.
So next morning says slip "my time has come.
I'll make this contest battle hum."
But again she paused in her frenzied haste,
And calmly surveyed a yellow waist.
-"I surely never can wear that, !
For don't you see I have no hat."
She fuddled aVvay a few more days,
In fixing hats in different ways.
"Now I'm ready. I look real sweet.
I'll capture the votes from all I meet. ,
But first, I must enter my nomination,
Then I'll fill the others with consternation."
To the Evening Bullletin office she flew,
And asked the manager what to do,
And how that she might start in best
To win a trip in the big Contest.
Says the Contest Manager, in voice composed,
"I'm afraid you're late. The contest is closed."
