Undo Sam has taken stock ot what
bus been accomplished at Punamn dur
ing tho seven years of hard work. May
4 ended the seventh year of canal con
struction by Americans Only one
fourth of tho great task of excavation
remains to be done, for the "ground
hogs" have removed 138,000,000 cubic
yards from the line ot tho canal. That
leaves only 44100,000 yards to bo cut
away.
Tho pluclng of the concrete In the
locks Is more than 52 per cent, com
pleted, tho Installing of tho lock gates
has begun, and 70 per cent, of the fill
ing for the Gatun dam, which will
feed the canal with water, haa been
done. Tho lock gates are staggering In
their vast proportion, compared with
tho timber gutes ot the canals In this
country. Each leaf, ot which theroare
two In a gate. Is 7 feet thick, 05 fcot
long und from 47 to 15 feet In height
There are no less than 92 ot these
leaCH. Special hoisting machinery has
been Installed to nluco these masses ot
steel. '
One of tho unexpected obstacles In
the construction was tho development
of twenty-tun slides In the Culebra cut,
within a distance of nlno miles, but It
H stated that these will not delay the
completion of thn cnnnl, ns tho earth
can easily bo removed by dredges after
the water Is tumid on.'
