CHANGING PARTY RULES.
Word lias been given out that the Republican Territorial
Committee contemplates amending the rules of the party.
Why the change?
The Bulletin has yet to learn of any widespread oppo
sition to the rules as they now stand or any loud demand
for a revision.
Therefore we would suggest that the committee go very
slow in its work along these lines.
More than one reason exists for letting the rules alone.
The political situation in this city and Territory at the
present time has all the possibilities of a powder magazine.
It needs only some unnecessary and foolish act to set the
whole thing ablaze and bursting with protest and open re
volt. Any tampering with the party rules at this time will be re
garded with suspicion. Such moves arc common in political
circles where points arc gained through manipulation of the
rules instead of direct appeal to the voters.
The members of the present Territorial committee should
not forget that they went into office on the platform of
square dealing as against political trickery and treachery.
They should therefore have a care that they do not fall into
an appearance of the evil ways of their former opponents.
Enough political excitement is in sight with a Governor
ship to discuss and two Territorial conventions to be held
without forcing upon those conventions the inevitable strife
consequent to an argument over rules and regulations. To
gain the best results for the Territory, and incidentally the
municipality which has a big problem to work out this year,
the Republican committee should pursue a course that will so
tar as possible eliminate strife, and destroy contacts of friction.
