ANIMALS THAT FLY
WITHOUT WINGS
Nearly all boys and girls In tlio
States are familiar with the llylirj
squirrel, which though It has 110 wings
has a fold of skin extending from tho
Iront to the back leg. taking tho plnce.
In somo degree, of wings. This skin
fctrotches out when tho squirrel jumps
enabling It lo tnko a long Hying leap,
Hut there aro othor animals besides
tho squirrel which fly without wings.
for nature has supplied them witn var
ious and sometimes queer appliances
which permit them to sail through tho
n r much as tho squirrel noes, in Aim
trnlln there Is a flying mouse, which
jumps Into the nlr und sails along for
n illstnnco, thus gcuiug away ironi na
enemies the faster ami more surely
Tho niouso has much the same sort of
"wings" that our flying squnrrel has.
Tho flying spider manufactures his
own wings, not always using tho samo
pair, but making them as occasion re
quires. Ills wings are simply webs
which ho spins, and which float out
upon tho air until .n breezo catches
ilinm. The Bidder holds on to his
wings nnd away ho goes, sailing off
through tho air.
Tho flying llsh haB two fins on Its
back which look very much like wings
nnd underneath Is another llu, so largo
and pecullaily-Bhnped that It looks
llko tho rudder of rt boat. This fish
can leap out of the wat,er, and, pio
unilnil liv Its two lariro tins, can sail
jiotno dlstanco through lie air before
dronnlng back into tho water. Theso
Ish aro frequently seen In tho warm'
or waters of all tho oceans.
Rut the queerest looking animal of
all that attempts to fly Is tho flying
frog. If you will Just Imagine one ol
our common frogs taking a Hying
!,. ulll, n fan attached In each foot.
you will got a very good plcturo
tho sort of llguro the flying frog cuts
wlien ''on the wing." The foot of this
frog which is a tree frog of Knst
India are long and havo webs be
tween tho toes llko the wlngf a bat.
When tho webbed feet nro spread out,
)ke four bat wings, they nro bo nwk-

proportion to Jho body of the frogi
,,, )ia presents n decidedly comical
ward in appeal unco ami bii large 111 1

much farther thnn ordinary frogs, ho,
doubtless regards his "wings" with
emtio satisfaction,
