OUR MERCHANT MARINE.
London, May 8. The Pall Mall Gazelle publishes as a
startling fact a report by the Medical Officer for the Port of
London that no vessel flying llie Stars and Stripes arrived in the
Thames in the whole of last year.
We do not know why London should be startled by this disgraceful
showing for the American merchant marine, but we do know that it should
cause every American with a drop of loyal blood in his veins lo sit up and
lake notice.
'I his record is shameful.
Certainly it should not be made more distressing by the enactment of leg
Mation that will make the operation of ships under ihc American flag less
attractive than it is today.
I lonolulu should do more than its share toward building up the American
merchant marine, not only for the love of Honolulu but for the love of coun
try to which every citizen should give more than a grudging dollar allegiance.
