At X o’clock Wednesday night the Legislature proceeded to the election of a State Treasurer. John M. Den nis (Dem.) and William P. Jackson (Rep.) being the respective candidates of their parties. John Thomas Sergeant John Thomas Sergeant, of Rising Sun. died f riday. January D, at the heme of William A Reeder. Rising Sun. aged So years. Mr. Sergeant had been in feeble health for some months past and recently suffered a stroke of paralysis, his condition gradually growing worse, until death finally claimed him. The deceased was a son of Robert and Rachel Sergeant, and was the last survivor of a family of three sons and two daughters horn to them. He wai horn near Rising Sun He never mar ried, and Clarence Thompson, of near Rising Sun. a nephew, is the only near relative in that vicinity. There are a number of other nieces and nephews residing in Wilmington, Del., and in North Carolina. The funeral was held on Mondy afternoon, services being conducted at his late home hy Rev. A. B. Two Million For Canal According to a report just issued by the chief of engineers of the United Slates Army it is proposed to expend $2,000,000 on the Chesapeake and Del aware Ship Canal by June HO, 1021. This amount would be expended ac cording to the following estimate: Purchase of land for right of way, $175,000; construction of new bridges, $650,000; dredging, $180,000; contract work, high-level elevation, $815,000; contingencies, supervision, adminis tration, SIBO,OOO. The necessary surveys will he made and it is proposed to construct and operate for three months a pi pc line hydraulic dredge in the work of deep citing the level between Chesapeake City and St. Georges. Fire At Cecillon Due to hackfiring from the engine, the electric light power house in Ceeilton caught fire Friday evening of last week about 7 o’clock.
