ICT An Important Jaw, rclatire to Highways will be found at the end of tho acts published to. ,lay, in a preceding column. D" Lo! TiiaVat; coming J From two steam boats, FIVE HUNDRED Emigrant landed at Toledo, in one day last week I and TWENTY. FOUR HUNDRED in one day, from eeven steamboats, at Detroit. Five hundred ia aaid to be the average daily landing! at the Utter place We scissor the following from the Philadelphia ' Commercial Herald i Where's the use of sighing like an old bellows, wearing long faces, and looking as melancholy as patience on a monument? We move that every man whose face here. after measures more than two feet and a half in length, shall be expelled from 'good soci. ety,' and 'put into tho middle of next month.' All in favor of this motion say aye con. trary no tho ayes have it! Clear out you long. faced gentry Presto 1 be gone." ' Thia ia the kind of paragraphs we like to ace. The lugubrious winnings of most of the edi. tors are a disgrace to tho corps, and an injury to the community. Schentetada Reflector. . ID"We vote in tho affirmative and agroo with .the Reflector. Forlorn' looks and a fit of tho "horrors' will never kindle the fire nor make the pot boil. - A short hand account of the whole trouble, --All tho world owes all the world more lhan all tho world are worth, and all the .world call upon all the world to pay. All tho world, therefore, are in reality worth just as much actual wealth as they were before all the world failed. Boston Advo cate, D" All the world then, instead of crying like babios, should unfold thoir lazy arms and earn a living. YVhon such paragraphs as the following from the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, appear in tho whig papers, we have pretty good evidence that "oil tho world are not quite ruined yet : . ' Surprise may be excited abroad, that at a time when the power of pecuniary suffer, ing seems stretched to its utmost tension and at points like ours, where the pressure is invariably proportioned to the extent of its business transactions such evidences of wealth and enterprise as are presented by tho almost weekly addition of a splendid stermboat or gallant schooner to our nu. mcrous lake craft, should still exist. But they exist, despito tho whelming embarrass, mcnts which paralyze the common business ; transactions of tho country. Among tho numerous steamboats brought out this season, the "New England" which left our harbor well laden for the west, is tho latest which has come under our notice. She was built during the winter past, at Mack Rock, under the superintendence of Mr. J. V. Danti, and is a handsome spocimcn of workmanship. The New England measures 450 tons burthen; deck 103 feet; beam 20 feet. She w propelled by one of Allaire's low pres. sure engines, and will carry in addition to Eassengcrs and baggage, a freight of 2500 arrcls. Although fitted for carrying, freight as well as passengers, tho cabins of the New England are fitted up in a stylo inferior to no boat on the lake. VVe were really surpi i sed to find such eleganco displayed in this department. The Gentlemen's cabin con tains 30, and tho Ladies', 10 berths, be. sides 4 state rooms all richly furnished, and what is vastly convenient to the tallest sort of men, the cabins are of very liberal height. - Tho New England cost some 845,000, and is owned principally by Messrs. J. Sal tar & Co., and J. Mayhew of this city ; and Messrs. Gillespie, Joyce & Co. of Clove, land. Sho is commanded by Captain C. BrjRHETT, and will run regularly between this pert and Detroit. Agents, Colson & Cooke, and J. Saltar & Co. ' O" Now, when so many faces look gloomy true philosophy intimatcs, thatit is better notwith standing every purse is gjtting lank an J Lill-ious, to laugh than cry. In this view, one of the New York penny daily papers, thc4Transcript, has the following humorous hit at the times : A List of Suspensions. Tho banks are suspending specie payments; tho prisons are suspending tho worst of their inmates ; tho tailors arc suspending their credit system, and those who never intend paying arc consequently suspending their orders for clothes. Tho respectable sixpennics, the large papers are suspending their profitsxnd will soon be suspending operations ; the bun, during tho panic which the Transcript has occasioned it, is suspending its wits; and the Sunday Morning News is suspending its judgement ; this, by tho by, has been so long suspended that many aro extreme, ly doubtful as lo whether it ever possessed any. Fashion is suspending its extravagance ; fops are suspending their moustaches and eyeglass: men monkics arc suspending their promenades in Broadway, and the elite are suspending balls, fetes and soirees, without which a few short months since they fovnd it impossible to exist. Cupid is suspending his arrows and Ily. men nis wren ; cierKs navo suspennuu writ ing sonnets, and ladies have suspended all thouchts of them, and Love himself has suspended all operations, in consequence of having had his pocket picked of the deside ratum to make tho pot boil.
