Editor Coonordia Eagle i
DEAR SIR :--In reply to All
communication to your journal,
dated Frogmore, March 28th, '
1880, and signed by G. C. Har
vey, I beg leave to state for
myselt and in behalf of the i
actire members of the School
Board, that we much prefer an
open complaint, a direct attack,
to a system of promiscuous
abuse, as we can always meet it
with rebutting defence. But
the complaint in this instance
is rather uncalled for from the
source from which it came, as
full explanatiou had been made,
to Mr. Harvey of the circum
stances in the case of the Pal
nietto school, which are these:
Since the opening ot the schools
of the parish, four different as
signments of teachers to this
school have been made. Three
successi ely declined to take
charge of that school owing to
the iunaccessability of the loca
tion, its distance front Vidalia
and frequent unusatisfactory at
tendance of scholars. These
failures necessitated advertis
ing in the local journals of Con
cordia and Natchez for teachers
and application to the Superin
tendent of Education at New
(Orleans for persons qualified to
take charge of schools. The
Board of Examiners and Presi
dent pro tern have at length se
cured the services of a young
mau qualified to teach a prima
ry school and sent him to take
charge at Palmetto, and if cir
cunnstanls do not prevent, we
trust to keep the schools open
for as long a time as the other
schools are taught.
As regards school houses, we
would state that the present
Board has built but one in the
parish, and if Palmetto district,
really wants to have a good
school, do as others have done,
secure a building for the pur
1 would finally call Mr. Ilar
.e3 'a attention to the fact that
the school Board is a body do
iug the no small ainountt of
work which devolves upon it
gratuously, and that said work
lails upon the shoulders of a
very minimum per centage of
said Board ; the member from
his district, for instance, being
F. S. StilELD)S,
Pres. pro tern School Board.
