The report of the Department of
Agriaulture for Jantaary and February
on numbers and values of farm ani
mals is interesting iri many respects.
The report is especially valuable in the
information that stock farming is re
ceiving more and more attention as
being the basis of all agriculture. The
reason is that an increase in live stock
means an increase in pastures and
.meadows, and in the capability of feed
ing, not only.the hay and grass, but
also the coarse grains at hand. The
realization of this fact year by year,
especially South, will add largely to
the capabilities of production. It will
increase the quantity, of manurethe
life of the soil to be applied to thai
acres cultivated in crops.
The revised census of, live stock
from the beginning of 1887? shows that
we have in the United Stales and Ter
ritories 12,496,774 horsesvalued at $109,
685,755, and average of $72.15 each
mules, 2,117,141,al ued at $167,057,-
*8, averaging $78,91. Of milch cows
"we have 14,522,083, worth $878^789
'"589, an average of $26,08 each. Of
oxen and other cattle there are 33,511,-
1750, of a value of $688,187,926, or
worth $10,78 each, a total of 48,038
833 head, worth $1,042,927,615. Of
sheep there are 44,759,314 worth
$89,872,839, or $2.01 each. Hogs foot
up 44,612,839 head.valued at $200,034,-
291, or $4.48 each. The sum total of
i the live stock of the country may
therefore be estimated at a gross value
of $2,401,586,938 for everything, old
and young.
WOMAN'S REIGN.
HOW IT WA S DONE
Man never appreciates his inferiority
to woman so thoroughly as when he
stands before the altar in the presence
of an audience of friends, and hears the
clergyman make him a husband. Nine
men out of ten in such a position
tremble as if they were about to be ar- -aentials. Old stable manure can be
rested for murder, while nine out of
ten women go through the ceremony
as gracefully and as composedly as if
it were an everyday occurence. And
it i 3 this timorous, quivering creature
in a dress suit that promises to protect
the calm and placid angel whose orange
blossoms are her aureole. What
delightful sarcasm there is in the
thought!
And in after life, when the husband
gets torn up by care, and when a little
trouble comes to steal away his peace
of mind, how is it then? The woman
who he promises to protect becomes his
protector She sees sunshine through
the clouds. She smooths put the
wrinkled brow of care. She puts new
life into his bosom new hope into his
soul, and he goes forth in the morning
with new strenght and new zeal to
wrestle- with- life and its responsibilities..
Woman may be the Weaker vesselJ
but she isn't broken up and doesn't go
to pieces as soon! as man.:

One of'the greatest and best men o*
this continent explains how it was that
he, raised upon the farm, never thought
of looking for anything better than
farm life. While yet a small boy his
father gave him a pig to be entirely his
own. This he cared far until ready for
market, when it was sold and the money
received was handed over as his special
property. The money was invested in
other articles of live stock, with the
understanding that the boy must sup
port thorn-by his own labor, performed
at odd moments, jhis he did, with de
light until he was age, when he found
rt himself in possession of quite a
able start' and it gave him, up to the
-time of becoming his own man, so
cplcasant a life on the farm that he, nev
er felt the slightest desire to.change it
ifor anything better, in fact there was
mothing better toehange it to.

the chances are that the effect from

As the world becomes better acquaint

Some persons claim that the proprie

We, however, do not blame them for
not publishing the formula, even to get

to that of the majority of physicians,
and the reason that some doctors give
for not adopting and prescribing it

Mr. Warner's statementthat many

that the desire of the unscrupulous
