H wc OLF CHASE was enjoyed by Mr. Little and Jim Hall last Friday which both declare to have been the finest sport of their lives. They had fifteen dogs and raised a wolf near the mouth of Little Cabin which for two hours and a half ran over a scope of country not over a mile square. Finally the animal changed off with its mate which after a time led the dogs off to the prairie and finally disappeared. JpEV. "W. T. KING has accepted JP the call to the pastorate of the Presbyterian church of this city re cently extended to him, and will begin his labors here the first of May. Mr. King entered Oklahoma at the open ing in 18S9 and has labored very suc cessfully in that field until the present time. His work as former pastor of the Vinita church was very satisfac tory and the-church and the town arc rejoicing at his return. I1 P TO SUNDAY 1190 cars of stock- had been transferred from the M., K. & T. to the Frisco at this point, the cattle destined for the Creek pastures. The placing of such a large number of cattle on the Indian Terri tory range is a half-way step towards foreclosure. The commission firms could not well insist on their custom ers selling at the present prices, but having gotten the cattle into this country they know they must go to market next fall. fRANK DUCKWORTH, who has been reading medicine for the past two years with Drs. Fortner & Bagby of this city, returned Saturday from St. Louis where, he had been in attendance at the Missouri Medical College. Young Duckworth is receiv ing a careful course of training in the profession he has chosen, and the foundations for a thorough medical education have been deeply laid, and it may be safely stated that when he is through he will be one of the best informed physicians in the country. Mr. Duckworth is a nephew of Dr. Fortncr, and lias received the full benefit of the experience and learning of these eminent physicians, who as practitioners have stood for j cars at the head of the medical profession in the Indian Territory. k LETTER from a friend at Wash ington says: Judge Springer re ceived a hearty welcome en his visit to Washington. 2o one is missed more from the house than he. I hap pened to see him when he met Speaker Reed the day he arrived. They shook hands as heartily as brothers could, and the speaker seemed delighted to see him. I was with the judge when he met Mr. Hittof Illinois. The judge saw Mr. Hitt first and he approached him and said 'Robert,' and Mr. Hitt was so surprised to see the Judge that he had to look him over to be sure it was he and then remarked in a happy way: 'Why, Will Springer.' Every body seems delighted to see both the judge and Mrs. Springer. They dined with Ex-Secretary of State John W. Foster last night and this evening will take dinner with the vice-president and Mrs. Stevenson. Last Saturday evening they attended the meeting of the literary society to which they be longed while in Washington which is composed of the leading literary peo ple of the city, including Mr. Ains worth R. Spofford, the librarian of congress. N2JIE ROWLAND, a woman of 23. the mother of four children, is in custody in this city and today will be taken to Ft. Smith on the very serious charge of murder. The family have been living for a year or more on a farm nine miles northeast of Welch, and about an equal distance from Chctopa. Monday noon the woman became enraged at her husband's fa ther, James Rowland, aged C8,and shot him three times with a 38-calibre pis tol, once in the arm and twice in the body. He died about 3 o'clock Tues day morning and was buried yesterday. Ike Teeples, deputy marshal at this city, was apprised of the affair and arrested the woman Tuesday, and she has been kept at the residence of Capt. White, pending the receipt of the writ. It is said the difficulty between the woman and her father-in-law was of the most trivial character, resulting in the lie being passed. The woman claims self defense and says further that about two yearn ago the old man tried to cut her with a knife. Mrs. Bloomfield, a neighbor woman, was present at the time and asserts that the victim made no hostile demonstra tion. The husband takes his wife's part and says the old man was child ish and hard to get along with. The family came from Shawncctown, Kan sas, and the victim was the father of Mrs. John Chouteau, of this city. T5 AST SABBATH'S SERVICES 1M probably ended the pastoral du ties of Rev. S. A. Caldwell with the Presbyterian church at this place. Mr. Caldwell has been in our midst nearly two years as pastor of the Pres byterian church, and is an able, earn est and faithful minister. He lias distinguished himself in this commu nity as being a man that preached a pure and unadulterated gospel, and who put into daily practice what he preached. In the providence of God Mr. Caldwell goes to other fields, and to labor among other people, but he goes with the love and esteem of this whole community. We feel that in giving up Mr. Caldwell we lose from our moral and christian atmosphere one of the purest and noblest of men. We shall miss his gentle, childlike bearing, his quiet and unselfish devo tion to the cause in which he has en listed, and the kindly interest he man ifested in those who came under his influence as pastor. Probably no man who ever lived in Vinita stood so near the children, or understood the younger members of his Hock so well as did he, and there is many a Bad lit tle heart that never in after years will forget one whom they loved as their true and trusted friend. Mr. Caldwell has accepted a call to the church at Shawnee, and will begin his labors there at once. "ifpHE DEMOCRATIC CLUB in this It? city is arranging for a grand time on the occasion of the territorial convention, June 9th. Bell and W. E. Halsc!!. This committee will secure a suitable building for the big convention and see that it is ap propriated decorated, etc The pres ent membership of the clab is about 350 but an effort will be made to dupli cate that number between now and the convention. A committee to so licit members was appointed by the chair, consisting of Dr. G. R. Hill, Dr. J. R. Trott, E. M. Ming, Dr. E. B. Frayser and J. B. Turner. The club extended an invitation to Judge G. B. Dcnison and Attorney J. B. Turner to address the democracy next Saturday night at the U. S. court room, also an invitation is to be ex tended to Hon. M. E. Benton, of Ne osho, to address the club at some date between now and the 30th of May. See those sideboards at W. W. Mil ler's. Handsomest ever brought to Vinita. H.A.Paul has severed his connec tion with the Cobb hotel, and Fred Schcruble assumes entire management beginning tomorrow. Success to Fred. The Catholics expect to open a school at this place in the fall. As an educational center Vinita's future seems assured. Very flattering reports come to the parents of Louie Skinner of the prog ress she is making in her studies at Baird college, Clinton, particularly in music. Emmet Ming and Preston Davis are now confident that life is worth living. They found a hole last week just teeming with fish aud Ming caught the largest bass seen In town in Ave years. The Old Settler payment is 8159.10 a share, but of course most of the shares are divided up into many parts. The agent begun paying at Ft. Burns, Vinita, I. T. A meeting of tbe board of health, the city council and some of the busi ness men was held Monday night. The purpose was to get the merchants to agree to accept at face value some of the city's scrip. Dr. Foreman's soda fountain, or arc as it is termed, is certainly a hand some thing and in his selection Mr. Highwood showed bothgood taste and judgment. Yesterday was opening (free) day and the demand was all that could be desired. The cattle outlook is far from prom ising, low prices at present following high ones of last fall when many of our stockmen bought. An unusually large number of cattle have been poured into the Creek pastures from Texas and practically all of these must go upon the market this fall. A general picnic to which all arc in vited will be held on Thursday, May H, at Swain's grove, near the railroad crossing of Big Cabin. The ladles of the Eastern Star of this city are back of the enterprise, an assurance of a pleasant time. Take your families and likewise your baskets. Charley Chesney has bought a new printing outfit and will open a job printing oflicc at Topeka, Kan., this week. He is an extraordinarily tasty and rapid printer, Topeka is a good town and as himself and family have been known there for twenty-five or more years, his success seems assured. The case of Jerry Wallace, convicted of murder by the U. S. district court at Ft. Scott and sentenced to hang, has been reversed by the U. S. supreme court and given a new tiial.
