Story. And. by the way, tbe "mystery" about
this investigation reminds us of one of Dun Bry
ant's stories. He remarked to the other "end
man" that be had "a mystery np to bis house."
"What was it?" was eagerly asked. "Well, I
bought a barrel of pork day before yesterday, and
yesterday morning, when I went down to get
some pork for breakfast, I found there was oo
pork in sight, rolled up my sleeve and put my
arm way down into de brine and fell all around
to de bottom, and there was no pork anywhere.
Then I lipped up de barrel, and found dat de
blasted rats had gnawed a bole through de bot
tom and took out all de pork." " That's a very
likely story," Bays tbe other "end man." "How
did de rats get de pork without letting out de
brine?" To which Bryant replied triumphantly,
"Hat's de mystery." We should like to see Mr.
Irwin's " mystery" cleared up a little further.

Animals and Firearms. That crows and
many other species of birds bue little fear of
man when he is unarmed is a familiur fact, and
suggests that they fear him because of the weap
oos he carries. In Scotland, where shooting'was
prohibited on Sunday, crows and rooks were gpn
tle. aud fed around tbe building- without concern.
Singularly enough tbe same thing was observed
of animals by Dr. Tristram wben traveling in the
wilderness of Moub, where the sound of a gnn is
rare. He says: " We were struck with tbe sa- i
