Garibaldi seems to hare grown pacific and con
servative in bis old age. Tbe I'ope and the
Italian Government alike entertained fears that
bis arrival in liouie would be the .ignal of com
motion and revolution. Hut all such fears' are
now dissipated, for tbe old man, who has in
stormy times rendered such gallant service to bis
country, has assumed such an attitude as identi
fies him with the friends of peace aod order. Ue
probably thinks (and with reason) that Italy with
Rome as her Capital has now won such a posi
tion of vantage that all she still needs to achieve
can be won peacefully, gradually, and without
revolution.
Tbe rules of politeness are never at variance
with tbe principles of morality. Whatever is
really impolite is really immoral. We have no
right to offend people with our manners or con
versation. We have no right to deal with or be
influenced by gossip about the people we meet.
Their private affairs are noue of oar business.
If we believe a man or woman to be unfit com
pany for tu, we must not invite him or ber ; but
if we meet them where they have been invited
by others, we must treat them with civility.
At llamburg, the longest day has seventeen
hoars, and the shortest seven ; at Stockholm,
eighteen and a half hours, aod five and a half ;
at St. Petersburg, nineteen and 6ve ; at Finland,
twenty-one and a half and two and a half. At
Wondorbas, in Norway, the day lasts from tbe
21st of May to July 2d, the sun not getting below
the horizon for the whole time, but skimming
along very close to it in tbe north. At Spitsber
gen, tbe longest day lasts three months and a half.
A Faithfci. Wife. In the New York Ray
Cemetery is a tomb, and within rests a metallic
coffin and an easy-chair. Twice a week there
comes to this chair a middle-aged lady, who qui
etly unbolts the iron door, seats herself in tbe
easy-chair at the bead of tbe coffin, and mentally
converses, as she thinks, with tbe dead husband
who lies by ber side. The constancy has been
persisted in daring the past eight years. So ac
customed are tbe keepers and workmen at tbe
cemetery to ber coming that tbey now tbink no
more of it than of any other regular occurence
of erery day life. The husband died while on a
visit to California, and was sent back to bis wife
in the metallic coffin in which the body now lies.
The features are said to be as natural as on tbe
day of his death.
A Crwors Libel Srrr. A rather singular li
bel suit has jast been decided In the State of
Maine. The Portland Press declared that one
Stephen Grant was tbe greatest liar in the State,
and he broneht suit against the paper, laying his
damages at 810.000. The verdict was for the de
fendant, consequently Mr. Stephen Grant has
the satisfaction of reflecting that by a jury of his
countrymen be has been awarded tbe peculiar
position of champion liar in the State. We pre
sume that the evidence in support of the defend
ant most have been very strong, or the character
of the complainant particularly weak.Jbul it it odd
that a man who mast have known how eminent
were hit claims to tbe title bwtowed upon him,
should have gone into Court at all with such a
case. Perhaps, however, he wished to secure a
legal certificate to the fact of bit superlative
moadacuy, in which event he itdoabtless grati
