About thOM- Apples.
The old conundrum about tbe number of ap
ples eaten by Adam and Eve In the Garden of
Eden has started on another tour. We are sor
ry ; for tbe answer has never been correctly given,
making the result as follows : Ere 8 and Adam
2 ; a total of 10 only. Now. we figured the mat
ter oot differently long ago, but through exceed
ing modesty, never proclaimed tbe result, which
is now given: Eve 8 and Adam 8 also; total, 1C
Boston Journal. We think the above figures
are entirely wrong. If Eve 8, and Adam 82.
certainly the total will be 90. Scientific men.
however, differ. On tbe strength of the theory
that the antediluvians were a race of giants, and
consequently great eaters, they reason something
like this : Ere 81st and Adam 82 ; total, 163.
Gloucester Advertiser. Wrong again ! What
could be clearer than if Eve 81, and Adam 812,
the total was 893 T Latrrence American.
Tfaourrh the mystery seems inexplicable to others,
we are satisfied we bare tbe true solution in that
Eve 81, and Adam 812-1 company, making a
grand total of 8205 Border City Herald. We
bave a German friend who says that before Eve
commenced eating Adam eat "nein." This
makes a total of 8214. San Francisco News
heller. We are astonished at the limited ac
quaintance with the simplest rules of arithmetic
shown by our contemporaries. We figure it out
thus : Eve 811st, and Adam 6124 company. It
then follows, " as the night tbe day," the total
is 8395. Facts and Figures. We suppose
Fads aud Figures thought this settled the
question. Unfortanately for him, however, our
contemporary is wrong in both facts. If Ere ate
one first, how could Adam have ate one too for
company ? Now, to show that his figures are
wrong, too, here is our solution : Eve 81; Adam
then 81240 but that man it an imitative animal.
This makes the total 81,321. Tlie Western Set
tler. Brother Jonathan appears to have hod a
pretty good innings at this conundrum ; but I
think he has altogether failed in giving it. What
can be plainer than this ? Etc 812 ascertain tho
flavor, and thus gratify tbe natural curiosity of
her sex; Adam 81242 reasons. In the first
place he was desirous of knowing what was tbe
taste of tbe fruit, and in the second place he was
anxioas to gratify his " missus," by following the
example she had set him. This gives a grand
total of 82.054. Correspondent of Suti Austra
lian Advertiser. Very good. Our correspon
dent has not made a bad attempt to wrest the
laurela from our American cousins ; bat we have
given a little thought to the matter, and have
come to tbe conclusion that even ho is a few
hundreds of thousands ont in bis calculation.
What does be say to our solution ? When Eve
saw Adam wistfully eyeing the fruit, she 8124
etull him. Adam then 812240-fy himself for the
battle of life which Eve, when she hail eaten
bers, told him was inevitably before him. The
total number eaten was, therefore, 820,364.
South Australian Advertiser. Not quite cor
rect yet, for we think Adam 8124240-fy himself,
which, added to Eve's 8124, makes a total of
8.132.364. Launceston Examiner. Wrongagain!
Eve 8140, because she was naughty ; and if
Adam 8124240-fy himself, then the total number
must have been 8,132,380. Sydney Evening

Sir : Ton are all wrong about apples. Eve,
ei4240-fy faerseir, and Adam 8124240-fy himself,
making a total of 8,938,480.
September 18. T. II. W.
Sir .-Beading your solution of the number of
apples eaten by Adam and Ere in the Garden of
Kden, reminded me of a note I made about it
some considerable time ago. Now, after a very
careful examination of tbe only then known ex
isting genuine document of that period (moat un
fortunately for me, since destroyed,) which note
was to this effect : " Eve bearing Adam talking
apples in his sleep, got up very early in the morn
ing and 81424-stall him ; and with her knowledge
of what must happen, persuaded Adam
428124240-fy himself against tbe coming events."
Of coarse the language used is rather primitive
but education was not even then compulsory.
Some hypercritical persons may say the quantity
eaten is absurd. I think otherwise, when it is
admitted by every one who understands anything
about the subject, that Adam alone could cat at
that time more then all tbe rest of the men in
the then known world. Thus, tbe total number
really eaten was 428.205.664, which, from other
Bources, I calculate was tho total quantity on the
tree that season.
September 19. C. E. H.
Clarence Town, ISth September.
Sir: Beading in your issue of tbe 16th inst.,
" About those Apples," I was surprised to see
the ignorance displayed by so many people on
the simple theological question of bow many ap
ples were eaten by Adam and Eve. Even tbe
Sydney Evening Kews, which was tbe most cor
rect, and which said that " Eve 8140, because she
was naughty ;" and that " Adam 8124240 fy him
self," making a total of 8.132,380 ; I say even so
high an authority on things in general as tbe
Sydney Evening Kews was far, very far, from
being correct on this subject. The facts are
these : Eve 61404 she was naughty ; and for
each 1 eaten by her Adam 8124240-fy himself.
Therefore, the two 8,124.240 x 81404 661.335,-
632,960 apples. I trust I have set this disputed
question right at last (and I ought to be a suffi
cient authority on tbe subject,) because, I am
Honolulu, July 21st, 1874.
Editor or tiir Gazette ;
Sir : It is remarkable that so much ignorance
is displayed in the foregoing arithmetic problem
and quite as remarkable that the Sandwich Is
lands should have the honor of solving this
" sphinx," for any one with an eye for an apple
will at once see that the following solution is tbe
only correct one.
The natural cariosity of woman being conceded,
it is impossible to blame Eve il she did eat 140
else than to convince Adam that she was right
and be was wrong, or that Adam agreed to
" make up their little " tiff" by eating 12 ; the
total number eaten by our first parents was there
fore 152. I think this finally settles this little
apple business, for who should know better than
the " ArrLE or Discord."
