Loxno Jane 12. Aboat six weeks ago there was
a beaTy rail of ashes and cinders along tbe northern

Strange materials, coming from a northwesterly direc
tion like immense clouds through tbe air, were of
roloaaie origin. It was at once thokrht that there
must bare been an eruption at Mount Ueela in Tee
land. A steamer was dispatched from Copenhagen,
and the vessel has returned from liejkjavik, with
Devi of aa unparalleled disaster, it seems that the
outbreak began on Christmas, and has eontiaued ever
since with scarce any interruption. For seven weeks be
fore Christmas the inhabitants were terrified by sub
terranean noises like thunder, which extended through
nearly two-thirds of the island. Early in January
followed earthquakes in all direction;, and at last. an
old extinct volcano near Vatrayskud. opened, and
for four weeks continued to eject immense quantities
of liquid fire, lava, ashas, and a muddy fluid mass at
boiling beat. The village, and some smaller bamlats
and farms within a radius of twenty miles, were de
stroyed, and over a thousand people had to flee for
After ft.gr weeks this voleaoo eeased, bat at that
moment another extinct volcano, nearly a hundred
miles away, near Myratu. sent its burning mass upon
the peaceful habitations around. Thiseruption lasted
for several weeks, the village of My vatu became a
prey to the fiery elements, and the whole country
for more than fifty miles around was devested. More
than eight hundred of tbe people are reported as
having been rondrred homeless. Early in March
there seemed to be a general upheaval of tbe earth in
tbe whole central portion of tbe island ; nea mounds,
sa it were, rose to the surface, some to a height of
several hundred feet, and over a thousand feet io
diameter at the base, amid tremendous shocks of
thundering beneath. They split open at the top and
vomited forth their burning contents upon the surface
around them, eoveriog a distance of 200 miles. Ten
thousand people are said to have lost nearly all their
possessions, and the remainder, who lire nearer to
and along tbe coasts, some 40.000 in number, are
themselves too poor to sop port such a vast number of
needy people. Several hundred persons are also re
iported to have perished. Tb world renowned Gey
sers hare dried up since the terrible eruption began
and instead of water, those mysterious funnels emit
immense quantities of hot smoke and ashes, which
during tbe night, rising several thousand feet into the
air. appear like gigantic columns of flameless fire,
risible for hundreds of miles. It is said that no
historic record of any volcanic eruption anywhere in
Ike world oompares with this, either in territory over
which it extends, the number of newly opened craters.
