I tar Signal Service Bureau has accumulated data
which are very valuable to meteorological science,
and avoided many disasters oo the coast by the warn
ings of approaching storms. Thousands of dollars
have been saved oa the Ohio and Mississippi rivers,
by taking prcautious when warned of the threatened
freshets lroia the boad waters. The value of this ser
vice was recognized by Congress in an increase of
$.10,000 iu the appropriation, orer last year.
The Boston Pout remarks : The trial of the muti
neers of the Jefferson Borden, now in progress before
Judges Clifford and Lowell, in the United Slate, Cir- '
cuit Court in this city, hat a peculiar interest as the
judicial record of one of thoso tragedies of the sea '
which eren surpass the imaginings of romance. Tbe
story of Capt. Patterson, as told on tbe witness 1
stand, is a tale of horrors whose terrible reality can
hardly be understood. To battle for days with a hand
of desperate and determined men on the circum
scribed deck of a schooner on the opon teas, with no
cbance of retreat and no hope of assistance ; to work
tbe vessel through storm and calm under a shower of
aisalles hurled by the mutineers with dexterous aim:
to watch night and lay against a surprise that would i
mean sudden death ; and to finally reduce the murder
ais to submission and, bring them in irons to justice,
is an experience given few men and desired by none. !
