Mb. EDiTon: It is said upon tbe street that tbc
Reformatory School will lose the services of its
superintendent at the close of tbe Tear, and it may
be In order to say a word In regard to increas
ing its uselnlneas as an Institution lor both sexes.
At present boys only are sent to it for reformation
and education. Why is It that jrirls arc not sent
to this Institution ? At a venture 1 answer. For
the reasou that the management has never been
equal to the matter. Wc have a law to '-Mitigate
the diseases aud evtl& arising from prostitution, "
that, so fat as is practicable, mitigates the diseases
;ieculiar to the social cancer; bat wc have never
beard of the first attempt made to mitigate other
evils growing out of prostitution ; no effort to re
form the poor deluded creatures who come nnder
the provisions of the law. Would it not be well to
send the younger victims to an institution wberc
they receive sound advice and training As it is now,
a girl who violates tbe provisions of tbc lsw referred
to is summarily sent to the prison, where she asso
ciates with older and hardened transgressors. I trust
that tbe Board of Education In selecting a Principal
for tbe Reform School, will bear In mind the girls of
tbc present day, aud tender to tbcm tbc advantages
of the Institution. RErottM.

Pzksokai. Our readers may remember George
P. Latbrop, son of Dr. Latbrop, who resided here
during the fifties. Mr George P. married a daughter
of Hawthorne, and is now editor of the Atlantic
monthly. He has already, though not overtwenty.
three years of age, earned a reputation as a poet,
and bis first volume of poems will be published dur
ing tbe present winter. He, like Annis Montague,
first saw tbc light of day on Hawaiian soil, and Ha
waiian are all interested In bis and her literary
fame : and should they ever re-visit tbe scenes of
their earlier years, tbey will meet with u warm wel
come Labor Sa vino. It will Interest the ladies or such
of them as are familiar with "spatter-work," to learn
tbat an improvement has been introduced in the
mode of spattering tbe ink on tbe cloth or paper, lu
spatter-work. This ia done by means of a syringe,
such as barbers use lor sprinkling cologne In their
(Oiisorial art. But instead ol cologne, iuks of
various colors, black, blue, red, violet or green, are
used, according to tbe taste of the artist These sy
ringes can be obtained at Dillingham & Go's., while
ibe inks may be procured at any stationers. With
these simple Implements, very bsndsome " spatter,
work " can be executed in a few minutes, which un -der
tbe old process occupied as msoy hours. A sam
ple of tbe work may be seen in oar store window,
done by Mr. A. Young, who has first succeeded in
applying tbe syringe to fancy work of this kiai.
Bt-SOLSBT. Tbc residence of Mr M. B. Beckwith
in Nuuana Avenue, was entered on Sunday last
while tbe family were at church. Tbe thief rum
maged through tbe drawer and trunks, and suc
ceeded iu finding ($.25 belonging to some charita
ble institution, and decamped with the coin. Tbc
cook of one of tbc neighbors observed a native boy
leaving tbc bouse during Sunday forenoon, bat
nothing occurred tat excite bis suspicion of
tbrft. If tbe thief shonld be fonnd and brought be
fore Judge Jones, wc think be would not get off so
lightly as did a boy who was brought up before the
police magistrate some years ago tor stealing copper
on Sunday. The kind hearted judge beard the evl.
dence, which was clear and conclusi vc, and when be
came to give a decision, said that tbc lad was
loo young to go to work in tbe chain-gang where
he deserved to be. So be gave him a bit of advice,
" My boy, its wroog to steal, bat to stcsl
on anday Is rery wrong. Now go home, (lid !
don't be caught stealing again, particularly o& Bun- i
Miss Akms Montagit. In the Boston Globe we j
find tbe following notice of the first appearance of
this young lady, which occurred on tbe evening of
Oct. 36: " Tbe part of tbc Queen was taken by Miss
Annis Montague, who made ber first appearance in j
Boston on tbe occasion. Wben she began sbe
seemed a trifle bewildered, and her voice was rather
weak. As she progressed, the better tone of ber i
vocal organ were discovered, aod united to an ex
cellent method and skillfuljmanagment ol tbe voice,
made a very agreeable Impression. Just bow high
to place tbe lady lo our estimation we cannot at 1
this w rltins determine : and will reserve for a sub
sequent notice a taller opiuioa ol ber merits, lo ;
action last night ahe was lor tbe most part very dig- '
nified, which, in ber charade! as Queen, can by no i
inckiis be called stlffucs. It was rather a judicious
presentation of sorb a character." The following
refers to her second appeareucc In tbc same city:
" Miss Montague, who appeared forthe second time,
showed tbat sbe poataesaea the elements of an artist.
With a little more courage, or perhaps wc should
say with harder effort to overcome a too modest
diffidence, abe would strongly assert her claims to a
higher rank. As it Is, she shows an easy mastery of
the technical part of ber singing, and ber voice al
arary fall meet agreeably upon the air as of a street,
pure and mellow qaalit. Last night tbe limits of
ber score brought ber voice below a range where
moat sopranos bare the greatest effect laeoess, and
it also anfortonatelv hapttcued that she was to fre
quently concerns -d lo atttg to a& accompaniment of
ciangitis; brass. Her acting; was graceful aod iotelll-
