riag on Sunday this year, Monday la-t was observed
aa the holiday, and stores aud ofliccs were generally
closed and business suspended, while the majority
of the denizens of town devoted themselves to their
otru amusement and pleasure as fancy dictated.
There was a general and patriotic display of bunt
ing throughout the city and suburbs, and at noon
the Puiicbbovtl battery tired the customary salute.
In the afternoon the Royal Guard and Prince's
tlnn, infantry, under tbe command ol His Majesty
as Colonel, and accompanied by the Royal Band,
and tbe Leleioboku Guards, cavalry, under the com
mand of the Prince Leleioboku, proceeded from
their ret.ctivu armories, to Kulaokahna plain,
where tbe iufaulry went through a dress parade,
Major (tulick acting as lieutenant-colonel. They
subsequently went through with the bayonet drill,
iu which they showed the results ol long aud as
siduous practise. To wind up the exhibition of
military tactics there was a sham fight which af
forded much amusement to the large crowd assem
bled on the grounds. The cavalry which had been
exercising on the eastern tide of the plain, having
been discovered approaching, a company were de
ployed as skirmishers, and as the enemy drew near
they tallied by fours, tbe reserve forming a hollow
square. The cavalry came charging gallantly down
ou the right flank of Che skirmish line, but the
shock made no impression ou the infantry; they
calmly stood their ground, and the horses being un
accustomed to the noise of firearms, were withgreat
difficulty prevented from stampeding. Tbe charger
ridden by tbe Prince became so demoralized as to
rear and plunge, and His Royal Highness wasiuconti
netitly precipitated to the ground, but lurtunalely
was unhurt. Meauwbile a part of the cavalry, find

reserve. They were met with a vigorous discharge
of musketry, and a number of the footsoldiers hav
ing fnrgotlcu to remove the stoppers from the muz
zles ol their piece, several of the cavalry men and
horses received painful wounds. The Prince finally

Sumc Ceylon planters have visited Tut Bua's plan

Curiously enough the name of the district is " Kandi,"
reminding tbetu more strongly of Ceylon. Coffee

they arc fairly opened up. The climate, of course, is
very much better than (hat of the coat, and the in

In vetoing tbe bill for the reduction of the salary
of the Presideot to $i5,000, Grant has acted with
perfect consistency. He has himself accepted $50,

he looked forward to the possibility of a third term,
and if he thought $50,000 not too much for himself
he could not approve a bill limiting the compensation
of his successor to one-half that sum. In his veto
message be says that tbo salary was $25,000 when
we had a population of only three millions ; that dow
we h ivc forty millions, and we tlth and cost of living
are largely increased. These are facts which the
penny-wise economists cannot dispute. Fifty thou

support the dignity of tbc Presidential office. We do
not see how the President could consistently give Li

The Fatal Thirteex. There are siily ttoriet in
the papers about the superstitious notions of tbe late
A. T. Stewart, and bis belief io signs and onions,
lucky days, places, persons, events, etc. Hut it is a
curious tbiug, as well as a true one, related of tbe so
called superstitions, or whatever they may be called,
which seem to linger in his mind, that, at tbe very
last of the usual Sunday dinner parties given at his
houso before his death, there were tho unlucky num
ber of thirteen persons present at table. He bad al
ways previously avoided that number. It is also a
curious fact that, on this occasion, the unlucky
omen was noticed by ono of the thirteen guests, who
laid to another of them that there would be a death
in the bouse In eight days afterward the master of
the house lay dead in a chamber not far from the
dining-room New York Sun.
Smoked Oct. Boston furnishes a good example in
a street car incident. A man who persisted in smok

tor on tbe ground that the company had the right to
make and enforce rules against smoking.
Folks arc considerably disappointed because there
is to be no reduction of fare to thote joorncying east

tag. and tongs aad negro delineations by Mr. C.
Morting . concluding with a farce entitled " Raising
tbc Wnd by Mesmerism." The performance, on
tbe whole, was gd, aad deterred the hearty
.audits accorded by tbe auiieaee. Lottie is really
a wonderfwl little girl aad foes through her d.riag
trapes feats with th greatest Rf case. Master ft"
lands, wbal is that to us? The official representatives
of the United States in Samoa, Mr. Foster, was evi
dently delighted to get rid of him. I'nless tbe English
authorities can lay hands upon documents among bis
laggage of interest to the I'nited States in connection
with high personages at Washington, who certainly
befriended him in the begining, we devoutly desire
that he may refrain from intruding Steinberger any
more upon our attention. Hit friendt attribute bis
downfall to his warfare upon the mitsionariel and
ffquor dealers. A man who respects neither rum nor
religion need expect no sympathy from tbe civilised
world.
