WkoioIIT Ikon Pipes. The inventive genius of
the Yankee iu California has succeeded in obtaining
a substitute lor tbe expensive aud short lived wood
en flumes, which have been heretofore so much
used in conveying water for mining operations in
that country, which might be introduced here with
happy results. We refer to the U6C of sheet iron,
generally of about l-16th in. thickness, for making
pipes. They make them of all sizes, up f twenty
lour inches and over, riveting the joints and dipping
tlictn in boiling petroleum to prevent the action of
rust. Where the pressure is great, as in case of
crossinc deep ravines, or gulches. It is of course
necessary to make the pipea of a greater thickness,
but tbe size above mentioned is tufflcieut for any
ordinary (Trades. We learn that Mr. G. N. Wilcox,
of the Grove Farm Plantation, on Kauai, has ordered
a quantity of this piping from San Francisco, in
tending to substilutc it for a long flume by which
lie now carries I he water across the lioinakaunale
bua gulch. Mr. S. T. Alexander, of Haiku Planta
tion, also proposes to make use of It in the uew
ditch w hich be has already commenced.
Vlcetabus Deterioration. It is a fact well
known among all agriculturists, both civilized and
barbarian, that a frequent change of seed is neces
sary to maintaiu a high stale of perfection in tbe
products of the soil. The native Hawaiian does
not like to plaut his taro-tops in the same patch
where they grew, but will, if possible, exchange
with a friend whose garden lies a mile or two dis
tant. If sngar-cane be planted year after year In
the same field, it will inevitably run out, and an
occasional introduction of fresh seed from another
island is always fonud to be beneficial. The most
striking exhibition of the advantages to be de
rived from an observance of this rule, was In the
case of some Irish potatoes brought to the
Gazette Office last week by Mr. Lainc. They
avenured about half a foot In length, ane as regards
quality they were ever more remarkable than for
4kixe. Such mealy, delicious potatoes we have
never before eaten In this country. They were
raised in Makawao from California seed, and con
trasted with the little bullet-like mnrnhva prow n
from native seed on tbe same grooud, they looked j
like giants among piguiys.
