aayi : Members of the Cabinet continue to be
at-ured that Hayef haf a majority, by din patches
from trustworthy pertonp at Tallha-fee ; but the
hopes of mort Kepubiicani here hare been ateadily de
clintne; f r the past four or five day, under the influ
ence of tbe lung continued uncertainty. The length
of time allowed tbe Florida Board of Canvaiaer tu
examine tbe returns as until recently believed to be
thirty fire day. It was thought there was no ex
preen froi-iin in tbe care of the vote tor the Prei
dential Elector, and that tbey would come under
tbe provision of tbe new law icspeotine the State
officer ; but an old law ha been dueuvered which
vuecifieally limits the time to 2G days.
New York, Nor. 20. The World's Washington
special ayr : The arrirat of tbe four companies of
regular artillery in this city thif evening was so un
expected and so at variance with tbe statement
made by the President, tJener il Sherman, aud Sec
retary Cameron yesterday, in denial of the report
that Washington is to be garruoned, as to create a
puiitive feutali n. Tbe force comprise 234 men.
Captain Loder reported bis arriral to Gen. Sberuiuu
at 6 o'clock this erening. The gentlemen named
above seemed anxious to have a conlradictiuu seut
far and wide of tbe story that a targe force of troopi
would be ordered here, tbe former even remarking
that be saw no reason why troops should be brought
here bow. I bare it also on undoubted authority
that twelre batteries of heavy artillery, altogether,
have been ordered lo report to Washington at once.
Three batteries are on their way from Furt Leareu
worlb, and one ii expected here before morning, acd
others from Fortress Monroe and Fort McHenrv.
All tbe journals express some solicitude at the con
centration vf troops at Washington. The herald
say, editorially : Tbe news we publish to-day re
lative to the concentration of troop at Washington,
will doubtless excite some comment, but it need nut
occasion any alarm. Tbc President anJ his advirers

March, Inauguration lay. They do not fear any
outbreak or disturbance, but simply wish to proride
for all possible emergencies.

A New Ixtektiom. Mr. Foster, of Pottland,
Oregon, has given as samples of preserved fruits,
brought by him from that place, which we have
tested and find to be delicious. They are prepared
by a new process invented by a farmer in that State,
in which the ripe fruit is reduced to a pulp, and
tbe juice is precipitated, drop by drop, onto large
hollow revolving drum ol tin, wbich U heated by
st cam. As last as the juice falls it Is reduced in
consistency by tbe beat, and forms a tough leathery
coating over tbe entire circumference of the drnm.
When this, bj tbe continued process of accretion,
has become sufficiently thick, it i taken off. form

Ai for Luuiiiana. there il no doubt. There need be
