The ' Smith Rolling and Onuhing Machine"
which is tr be exhibited at the Philadelphia
Kxhibittoa, is obviously intended for diminish
ing tie number of Smiths. It is understood
that it consist of a series of henry rollers re
sembling those by which Iron plates are
rolled, and also a pair of gigantic grindstone
of novel pattern and enormous power, th
whole being sot in motion by a twelve-home
power engine. Ita ntothtsl of operation is at
once simple ami effective. The operator take
a Smith of any sire, and adjusting the gearing
of the rollers to tlte exact width to which it is
desired lo roll the Smith, gently insert hit
: head between tbe rollers. Tho machine is
while esir ' then set in motion, ami in the brief apace of
: filtv-eight seconds the Smith is rolled to any
desired ilegree of thinness. If a Smith Is to
be oruaited, he is placed in a hopcr com
municating with tho grindstone, and after a
rapid trituration, varying from two to five
minute, acvotvling to the site and toughness
of the Smith, he is reduced to a fine and even
ground powder, in which such foreign sub
stances as buttons or shirt studs can be do
tooted only by the most delicate chemical
tests. The inventor, so it is said, claims that
by a very simple mechanical attachment the
machine can lie made to roll or crush Smythes
ami Schmidts with equal efficiency, ami he is
confident that the goneral principle under
lying his invention cm lw applied to Brown
ernshing or ltohinaon -rolling machine. But
why employ costly marhinery to roll ami
crush Smiths, when l hey could lie retired with
equal efficiency in a doten different ami loaa
la- expensive ways ? The inventor has a yet
' made no suggestion a to the possible uses to
hev which a rolled Smith might bo put; neither
ont haa he proposed any plan for the utilization of
crusheii Smiths, ihi the other hand, it it
perfectly evident that one result of his process
would be the financial ruin of coffin-makers,
who, aa ia well known, regard tho Smiths aa
their most valuable clients. The more closely
the invention is studied, the more plainly it is
seen that it meets no real want, and that it
propeaaea to do, in an elaborate ami costly way,
what might be done more timplv and cheaply.
