The Americans have again been victorious
in the International Rifle Match al Creedmoor,
the score standing aa fullawa :
American Team : : : : 3334
British Team : : : : : 3212
Though the margin is not large, this may lie
called a fair and handsome beat. Uncle Sam
is ahead yet.
It is not oar intention that the trumpet of
theUAZTTTE shall "pre an uncertain sound"
on any matters of legitimate public interest.
On certain question affecting the moral well
being of this community and the proper re
lations of the law thereto, we hare, ire bc-
liere, some tolerably decided opinions "which
we purpose laying befire the public at no
distant day in the columns of the Gazette.
We prefer, however, to wait until some of the
dust which prejndice, personi interests, and
party and social rivalries hare conspired to
raise, has had a chance to somewhat subside.
It is quite evident that the Adcertisv is not
pleased with our brief editorial on the posi
tion of the Attorney General, which appeared
in the last number of the Gazette. As we
cannot expect to always please everybody, we
are not surprised that even the candid and
courteous critic of the Advertiser tales occa
sional exception to our re marts. We consider
it, however, due not only to ourselves, but
also to our readers, to say that the Advertiser's
insinuation of the article in question being
written or suggested, either in whole or in
part, by the Attorney General or any other
outside party is entirely uncalled for and
destitute of any foundation in fact. It is
simply untrue.
The " new Editor" has not only written all
his own editorials thus far, but considers him
self quite capable of doing so in the luture.
As for our correspondent who signs himself
with ' three stars," as well as all other cor
respondents, they must fight their own battles.
We hare nothing to do with the matter.
Orxt readers will perhaps remember that in
our issue of September 26th, we declined to
accept, as conclusive, the accounts that had
recently been received from tbe seat of war,
to the effect that the Russians had captured
Plevna and been successful in other important
if net decisive operations. We called atten
tion to the fact that the time which had been
spent by the Russians in bringing up rein
forcements and supplies bad probably been
equally well improved by their opponents,
whose transportation facilities were superior
to theirs, and that the net result of the opera
tions then being carried on was stUllwna'tter
of great uncertainty.
It will be seen from the war news received
by the ' Bonanza" and "Australia," and pub
lished in to-day's Gazette, that wo were
fully justified in the ground we took at that
time.
It now appears that the Russians, instead
of taking Plevna, were, after repeated attempts
of the most desperate and determined charac
ter, repulsedwith frightful slaughter. At no
point had they, at the latest accounts, gained
any advantages which could in any degree
compensate for the tremendous loss they had
sustained, and should the reported capture of
Shipka Pass by the Turks prove true, the
Russian campaign in Bulgaria may be set
down as a dead failure.
The Iteclprocity Treaty.
We consider it a matter for sitcere con
gratulation that the United States Government
Commission now in session in San Francisco,
has been instructed to inquire into the work
ing of the Reciprocity Treaty. We trust the
investigation will be thorough and exhaustive.
We feel very confident that such an examina
tion will show conclusively to any .fair and
unprejudiced mind that the treaty, instead of
being, as has been asserted in some quarters,
a one sided contrivance by which a few sugar
planters in these Islands were to be enriched
at the expense of the United States, is, on the
contrary, a fair ami equitable arrangement for
the mutual advantage of the peoplo of both
countries. And not only so, but that the
business advantages to accrue to the people of
the United Statas will, to a considerable ex
tent, be reaped by them in adcaxct of those to
be enjoyed by our own people.
On thi- point especially we. call attention to
the evidence of air. Severance, the Hawaiian
Consul in San Francisco. Mr. S. having oc
casion in the course of his official duties to
certify all invoices, fcx goods exported from
San Francisco to these Islands is able to give,
cot opinions and estimates, but facts. From
his testimony, before the Commission, as re
ported in another column, it appears that the
exports in question for the year ending Sept,
1877, will be jits aboat daxble what they were
for the preceding year.
Almost equally important and suggestive
also iraJhTs connection, is the evidence of 11 r.
Henry B. Wflliuns which is as follows :
" There is a large increase of exports to the
" Islands. Registered tonnage to the Islands
" has increaaed ffly per eeai, and whereas
" vessels previously Lad light and not very
" valuable cargoes, such as coarse goods, now
" they go full and the cargoes consist of valu
" able merchandise."
The calculation of the friends of the treaty
in the United States, cf course was that by the
admission of American goods free their country-
would obtain the Tirtsal control of the
trade with these Islands, and that the in
creased profits the Islands would rnaV. from
the removal of the duty on their great staples,
asd the increased production which such ad
ditional profit would stimulate, would increase
their ability and disposition to purchase
American goods to such aa extent as would
mere than .compensate the United States for
the less of duties on the comparatively limited
jfTTttrrn of Hawaiian .sugar, rice, etc, hereto
fore produced aid exported to that country.
That the exports of American good to the
Hawaiian Islands should, however, within the
first year of the treaty going into operation be
djatirrf, and that the tonnage employed in the
traffic should in the same time have increased
fifty per cent, ia something, we think, which
even the most enthusiastic friends oi the
treaty could scarcely hare anticipated. Such
a showicg as this is certainly a very remark
able one, and ought to go very far towards
convincing those in the United States, who
have honestly believed that the treaty was a
one-sided arrangement to their own disad
vantage, that their view of the matter has
been a short-sighted and mistaken one.
