be hidden under so unattractive a shell. Both
these "news are imperfoct 'and mistaken,
though each contains enough of truth to make
it plausible. To depreciate or ignore fine
manners is essentially absurd. Their charm
is irresistible, tven to those who fancy themselves
proof against them. Tet it is not so
icuch in themselves or for their own sake that
they delight us in tho promise of something
better ana doeper. Ihey are signs or syrnDois
of character, feelings, affections, thoughts,
and it is to this that they owe their value and
