and the sugar is polarized but after
all precautions have been taken only
about one per cent of the crop will be
selected for seed By such care the
percentage of saccharine has been
raised from 21 to 14 per cent
The use of limestone in the manu
facture of beet sugar is said to be im
portant In the limekiln a gas i pro
duced which is drawn oft by means of
an air pump The gas is purified
by passing through water and is con
ducted o the vat which contains the
beet juice the carbonization tanks
Avhere from H to per cent of lime is
put in as may be required It is esti
mated that about 100 acres of beet
sugar land will produce an income in
one season of about S000 this being
calculated on the basis of
about Jii tons to tlie acre
growth of sugar beets and that itt pro
duction here would be of the highest
economic value This is only one of
many indications that point to the
interest taken in the proposed estab
lishment of the beet sugar industry
in the United States oifan extensive
scale
The establishment of a sugar trust in
the East would also indicate that refin
000 apportionel to the different refin
eries interested on an equitable basis
for a division of profits But there
are seventeen refineries throughout the
Union that have not joined the trust
so that it- future success is not yet as
sured although it has temporarily been
the means of advancing prices The
establishment of the trust is generally
regarded with disfavor by the pre s of
the country
The total imports of Hawaiian sugar
at Sau Francisco to date amount to
97500 tons and it is probable that 5
000 tons will yet be received from the
same source before the close of the
year This will make the crop of 18S7
exceed lOOOuO tons The exports of
sugar from San Francisco of raws and
refined amounted to 38000 tons up to
the end of Septemler
Some extensive sugar operations are
reported from Montreal where 0700
000 of raw beet sugar and 8700000 of
rawBrazil sugar or a total of 15400000
pounds had been sold within ten days
In Hawaiian rice there has lecii an
improvement this year the imports
up to the end of September amounting
to 92S2300 pounds as compared witfi
4792250 pounds in the same period
last year The value of this years
riee importations is- placed at 375135

his introductory remarks to the effect
that if the piece he was going to read
seemed to criticize the ladies too
severely it must not be inferred
from it that woman had anything to do
with tempting man to begin drinking
He had started on that career on his
own account The readingvasn serio
