Capt. W. G. Goodman, arrived on
Sunday, Dec. 31, 1892, 27 days
from Port Townsend. Left Port
Townsend Dec. 4, 1892; experienced
favorable weather up to Dec.
ISth, within 750 miles of this port.
From Dec. ISth to 26th had a succession
of hard southwest and
westerly gales, with accompanying
bad weather. From Dec. 2Gth to
31st had light to moderate S. E.
and S. W. winds and calms,
squally and rainy weather. On
Dec. 24th at noon passed a
(probably the S. G. Wilder)
bound to San Francisco, 5S5 miles
X. E. by E. froin Honolulu. Dec.
30th, passed bark Albert at 11 a.
m., 50 miles N. E. of Honolulu.
Cargo : 756,137 ft. rough dumber,
91.151 ft. dressed lumber, 4806
pickets, 33,500 laths, 256 M shingles
and 7 spars. Cargo and vessel
consigned to Messrs, Lewers &
Cooke.
A late Hongkong paper states
that the S. S. Zambesi has been
floated at Yokohama, and after
some slight repairs she departed
on her voyage to Hongkong.
The American barkentine Irmgard.
Capt. Schmidt, arrived on
Dec. dl, lo92, about 51 days from
Newcastle, 3ST. S.W., with 1100 tons
coal. She will discharge her cargo
at the O. R. & L. Co.'s wharf.
A London dispatch says : The
British steamship Dilaberg, from
Civita Vecchia for Middleborough,
was wrecked off" Long Sand, near
Harwich, on the 10th December.
In response to her signals, a lifeboat
was sent out. The ship was
already-going to pieces, and Capt.
Davies had already died of cold in
the rigging. After prolonged efforts
the ship was boarded, but only one
seaman was found, and he died of
exposure before he could be removed.
It was learned subsequently
that the rest of the crew,
numbering fourteen men, had put
off in a small boat when the vessel
struck, and by six hours of hard
work had reached a lightship in
safety.
The American ship Shenandoah,
which sailed from San Francisco
on August 20th, for Liverpool, and
the Uritish ship Bracadale, which
sailed on the same date for Queens-town,
are reported as having arrived
at their different destinations on
the same after voyages lasting
116 days. Both ships were racing
for a small wager. The dispatches
fail to state which vessel won the
race.

Thinks the Bounty
Auiericah.
New York, Nov. 14. A prominent
and directly-interested
calling upon Mr. Cleveland,
solicited his views concerning the
bounty system of promoting the
sugar" industry in this country.
Mr. Cleveland did not hesitate to
denounce sharply the s'stem as
not in accord with the Democratic
spirit of our form of government,
and one to which he is earnestly
opposed. He added, however, that
sugar was a proper article to be
considered in framing a tariff for
revenue.
A correspondent having disputed
the correctness of the above state
ment, the City Item of New Orleans
says that, "in self-justification,
it is authorized to wager, say
$1000, that the proof produced is
conclusive. Further the Item is
authorized to wager $2500, more or
less, at the -option of the taker, that
the sugar bounty, as it is now ordered,
will be repealed at the first
session of the fifty-third Congress,
if no action thereon is previously
taken."
17. S. NAVAL NOTES.
Rear Admiral Gherardi's fleet,
consisting of the Baltimore, San
Francisco, Charleston and York-town,
according to advices received
at the Navy Department, left
Peru, on the 10th December for
YalparaisOjOhih, on its way around
the Horn to New York to participate
in the Columbian naval review.
Charges are made against Capt.
Nelson of the United States man-of-war
Adams that he had an au-prentice
boy scrubbed with sand
and water while the vessel was in
the Behring. Capt. Nelson says
the boy had dirty habits and
needed the lesson. A naval inquiry
will follow.
Lieutenant J. H. Hetherington
has been ordered to the Mohican
on Januar' 6 next. Lieutenant
Hetherington, it will be remembered,
is the naval officer who shot
and killed an Englishman named
Robinson at Yokohama, Japan, last
winter for destroying his domestic
happiness. He was afterwards tried
and acquitted by the consular court.

"Uncle Ales" Bolster, a compositor on
the Advehtiser of this city, has recently
passed the sixtieth mile-post of his
life as a printer. Mr. Bolster has spent
the greater portion of his life at the case,
and this is what he has accomplished.
At an average of three columns a day
he has "set up" 56,100 columns.
This type put in a newspaper of eight
columns to the page would fill 7020
pages.
At five minutes per column ir would
take ono year, three months and
thirteen days to read this this amount of
matter.
If measuied by the "em" it would ag
gregate "ems."
At 60 cents per 1000 ems this amount
of labor would be worth $84,240.
Tins much type would weigh 780,240
pounds. It would contain 421,200,000
letters.
If these letters were laid end to end
they would covor a distance of 5S16
miles.
It would make 11,232,000 lines.
He could have set the unabridged
edition of Webster's Dictionary thirteen
times, or the Bible times.
If placed in one lon column it would
reach twenty-two miles.
If the metal were moulded into bullets
it would furnish Ammunition to fight the
American Civil war, and then have
enough type left to set 'five copies of
"Poor Richard's Almanac," three of
Talmage's sermons, and 297 patent
medicine testimonials.
