"The following Is given ns nn extract from a speech recently mado by n member of tho llrltlsh parliament: v lillo Spanish onlous nro not up ns yet Spanish bull fights aro ns. plen tiful as ever. Tho Philippines,, may go, Cuba may bo lost as It undoubted ly will be, tho Spanish throrio may t.o in danger, but those humanizing pas times, tho slaughtering of bulls for the amusement of tho populace, at) sistllt rampant. Llko Nero, the Spaj. inrd would 'flddlo whllut Homo vas burning. Tho Toreador Is still of greater Importance than mined cities nnd lost dependencies. Hut thero Is a time coming nnd'lt Is not far off, when the national fandango will bo danced no morp, when Spanish beauty must veil Itself In crepe, nnd tho glories of tho past sink below the horizon never more to rise. Tho Spaniard, llko tho Turk, Is doomed. Thero Is no room for 1Mb brutal methods of government, and the Yankco will presently prove It." SUIT FOR $5,000 Claims He Was Illegally Held in Oahu Prison. Asks for Datnagei-Tho Case-Man Was Onco Committed forTrlnl. In for Seventy-four Days, A suit against .Ins. A. Ixw ns iallor of Oahu prison was Instituted yester day. It Is a claim for damages in tho sum of 5,000. This nmount Is nsked for by Knunkakl, a native. The alle gation Is false Imprisonment, or some thing akin to thnt indictment. Kaua kaki says that ho was unlawfully held In tho prison for soonty-four days. This Is entirely a matter between an Individual nnd nn official of tho Government nnd does not touch Mr. Low personally. Tho nntlo was ar rested months ngo on n. warrant charg ing him with nssnultlng n oung Hn wallan girl. Tho prosecution before tho District Magistrate, was conducted by Deputy Marshal Hitchcock. Tho result of this hearing was that tho defendant wns committed for Jury trial at tho next term of tho Circuit Court for this Island. lleforo tho criminal calendar was reached nt tho term for which Kaua kakl bad been held, tho Deputy Mar shal bad Investigated tho caso more fully nnd hnd eomo to tho conclusion thnt tho outcome of n Jury trlnl would nt lenst bo doubtful. Tho Deputy At-torncy-Gcncrnl wns ndvlsed that tho prosecution ngnlnst Knuakakl had best bo dropped. This was done. It is clntmed that tho man should havo been liberated at once. Ho bad gone up to tho Judiciary building In charge of n policeman. Tho o(Hcer brought his man back to tho police station. Kauakakl wns "below" for several dns nnd then Bomch'ow wns sent to tho "reef," whero It was understood that ho was to bo held for trlnl at tho next term, or something of that sort. Ono olllelnl claims that tho mistake If thero bo ono pronounced In tho damngo suit, was mado nt tho Judi ciary building. Mr. Crelghton Is nt torney for tho $5,000 claimant nnd will of courso bring out nil that thero Is to show on behalf of his client. On tho other band It Is supposed that the legal departmtnt of tho Government will make n determined resistance, perhaps claiming that tho man should havo spoken for himself Instead of waiting to bo discovered as nn honor nry boarder at Oahu prison. Bargain in Shoes. We hear tho expression used con stantly. So muoh so that In nine cases out of ten it really has no slgnl&cance in connection with facts. A bargain in shoes represents standard value, at tho right price and at tho right time. Tho cheapest Is not always ths best neither Is tho best always the cheapest. Buy a good article and you will got satisfactory wear out of it In the long run. Buy a cheap article and It will keep you on the Jump con tinually to duplicate, then you might buy shoes on this basis every week In the year and never get your money's worth.
