Work on the new switch track for the National Lead company's subsi diary plant could not be started today bacau8e of the ground being too wet. Cameron, Joyce & Co., railroad con tractors who have the contract for the grading for this switch were forced to be idle today, and It was stated that work cannot be started until the ground (fries out a little. The rain yesterday threw a monkey wrench into the machinery tempor arily. With a few hours without rain, however, the work may commence. Mr. Joyce said that It wonld be neoessary to move some equipment to the site of the new awltch, also, and that this would be done as Boon as possible. A camp will 'be maintained by the construction company on tSe site. There will be 25,000 yards of dirt to bo moved in making this switch. Just how large a force would be em ployed could not be stated, but the contractors said that there would be a large force put to work on the switch. It is expected that it will con sume thirty working days to finish the contract. Bad weather will of course hamper the contractors bat every pos sible means will be employed to get the work done as soon as possible. The switch will connect the. North road ^lth the site given by the Indus trial association for the smelter. The right-of-way will run over land pur chased from property holders whose land adjoins the facftory site. UNION SERVICES WELL ATTENDED Rev. H. B. McElree Spoke at Fleet Christian Church and There Was Special Muelc. TJnion services which were held last night In the First Christian church were well attended. The speak er at this service was the Rev. H. B. McBlree of the United Presbyterian church. Special music was furnished for the service last night. Union services have been held for the last month, with the pulpit being filled by various local pastors. Next month will be vacation month for a number of the local pastors wh. will suspend all preaching services in their churches. IT RAINED SOME, TOO Moisture Which Fell During Morning Forced Abandonment of Blase ball, But Bathing Beach Prospered. Sunday morning snoozes were rudely interrupted about 5 o'clock yesterday when a heavy wind storm struck Keokuk, followed by raifi. Tor a few minutes, about five o'clock, the wind blew In great gusts, strong enough in several places to either up root or snap off tree trunks. Holly hocks and sunflowers which are growing unusually tall this year" be cause of so much wet weather, were bowled over In some places. The wind started dust whirls which looked like sm'oke, and tricked some people into thinking that there was a big fire at one end of the city. The wind storm came suddenly and wont almost as suddenly, hut the rain olouds lingered all day. The total precipitation was .88 of an Inch. The sun didn't come out un til tod Jate In the afternoon to do much good. The ball game had to be called off, but bathing beaches not being affected by wet weather, went ahead as usual. There was a big crowd at the Moose beach all during the afternoon and evening. The sky was all overcast last night, and it was not entirely clear today. Every mem ber Is urged to attend. —Iowa Factories for July says: The Industrial association has also announced that the Standard Four Tire company will commence at once to build Its new factory on the Indus trial tract. There has been competi tion among several cities of two or three states to secure this factory, but Keokuk was successful In landing it. —The current Issue of Iowa Fac tories says: Keokuk Is jubilant The Keokuk Industrial association has closed a contract with the National Lead Co. to locate a big Smelting fac tory In Keokuk. The new Industry will be known as the River Smelting and Refining Co., and will give em ployment to 400 men at the start. Keokuk gave the company 100 aSr*3 of land In the new factory site. The first building will be 400x400 end will be started in a few days. The ulti mate investment in the plant will ap proximate 12,000,000.00. PERSONALS. Languard, also own ed by Haniel, finished second.. The track was very muddy. Five Drowned. CHICAGO, July 19.—Five dead ^as the bathing toll at Chicago bathing beaches yesterday. The victims were two girls and three men who swam beyond the danger signs to get the benefit of breakers during a brief squall.
