Incidents tin In- First Day's Sale Under the Sheriff's Hummer. The sheriff's sale of Elarwood'a stock which has been the chief topic of conversation in ihieTcity for the post mouth, came off yester day. The sale was announced to conic off at 10 o'clock, but as early as 8:30 o'clock the fun commenced. At thai hoar a number of the interested creditors and a delegation of lawyers put in an ap pearance "at the court house to listen to the ruling of the court on an ap plication made by Morrison & Fitch, on be half of certain creditors, to restrain the sheriff from selling he stock in a bulk. The sheriff, through his attorney, J. M. Shaw, endeavored, in a long argument,- to] show the court that, after couaulunctlic attorneys of the creditors and also a Dumber of the parties who expected to buy more or less of the stock, that a larger amount could be realized from the sale of the stock in bulk than by parcel. Hi* at torney stated that a minimum of per cent, would be realized by gelling in bulk, while by selling at retail or parcel a portion of the goods would have to be sacrificed, and would not, in his judgment, bring anything near the above mentioned amount. However, the sheriff did not intend to take upon him self any responsibly in the mat ter, and desired simply to sell so ah to realize the largest amount, He would under the present circumstances, if the court fell competent to direct the' manner in which the sale should be made, proceed under such direction. It would be proper to state here thai the court was alive to the delicate situ ation in which it was placed. While suggest ing a great number of ways iii which the sale could be made so as to be satisfactory to all parties, concerned, no particular directions were given. Tue sheriff, through his attorney, desired to know the minimum price at which the credit on* Would be satisfied to see the. stock start ed at. Attorney Fitch, who represented the last of the judgment creditors on the list, stated that he would not consent to the sale in bulk unless the minimum price of seventy cents was real ized, which figure would be just large enough to reach his clients. Alter a long discussion, the sheriff, through his attorney,-* proposed that if the restraint was dismissed he would go on with the sale, . cither in bulk or parcel, as the creditors might agrwj. Upon the attorney of the judgment creditors agreeing to this proposition, the re- Taint was dismissed. Shortly after 10 o'clock Sheriff Thompson ar rived at the store to conduct the sale or post poll'! it as the creditors or buyers might-agree. The sheriff stated the stock, based upon the inventory of July 1, 1880, was; valued at |8Q6, -000. " " ,-..'' A motion was made that the sale b8 ad journed until 2 o'clock and the creditors ad journed to the Nicollet house. At the creditors' meeting, the object was Mated to affect an agreement or basis upon which the sale was to be . made. After the hour a half of talk, there being no signs of any agreement, the meeting adjourned. I li" sale commenced at '2 o'clock with a Blini attendance, the goods being sold in small pan-els. The buyers were present in large numbers and the bidding was very spirited. The buyers were principally home merchants and the goods, cotton dress goods and. domestics brought good prices. ..".-. ' Hoard of Trade. ■>' Th' board of trade held their regular j monthly meeting yesterday. The usual report of receipts and shipments was presented and a ~i^t of unimportant business transacted. \\\ l>. Wushbiirn and Charles W. Johnson were appointed as a committee, to attend the convention to be held at Washington on Jan uary ll'th, to take .action in regard to the national j bankrupt law. The annual election of the board of directors ■will be held at the rooms on Wednesday morn ing. A committee of arbitration, and one on grain inspection will also be elected at the same time.
