The Day of Atonement
Commences this evening and lasts until
sundown to-morrow evening, and ob
served by every Jewish citizen This is.
the great Jewish fast day, the origin of
•which is found in Leviticus xvi, 29: "And
it shall be unto you a statute forever:
in the seventh month on the 10th ol the
month you shall afflict your souls and do
no work al all * * * for on that day
shall you be atoned for, to purify you:"
and in Leviticus xxiiii, 26, * * * "And
ye shall do no work on that same day
* * * and every Jew that does any
•work on that same day that Jew will I
destroy from among his people."
Whilst the Israelites in their own land
worshiped at the altar of the Temple, and
in strict accordance with the rites dic
tated by God to Moses, the services of this
day were solemn and splendid. On this
day the high priest entered the most holy
sactuary of the Temple and pronounced
the name of the Deity, which at any other
time it was unlawful for even him to en
ter.
According to tradition the day of atone
ment, even before giving the law, was a
day of atonement and pardon. Adam did
penance and was pardoned on that day.
Abraham entered the covenant on this
day. Moses, after breaking the first
tables, ascended the mount again on the
Ist day of the month of Elul, se that the
second forty days expired on this day.
The Jew therefore approaches this day
with feelings of holy awe.
The preparation for the fast partakes
of that awful solemnity with which this
life is quitted for a better world. It is
customary in the evening for parents to
bestow their benediction on their children,
and the truly pious pronounces . this bles
sing with the fervor and heart-felt empha
sis of his dying moments.
Whosoever meet on that day, be they
previously acquainted, or complete
strangers, salute each other with brother
ly love, if an}- quarrel or dispute exists
it is obligatory to become reconciled. He
that is conscious of having wronged his
neighbor begs his pardon.
The moral influence of a day when rich
.aid poor penetrated alike with the senti
ment of their unworthiness, bow in the
dust before the omniscient Judge, where
the wise man considers not his wisdom as
a shield, or the wealthy his large posses
sions as a protection, but where all with
one accord of heart and voice exclaim:
"Pardon, O Lord, according to thy great
mercy the sins of this people, even as
tkou hast pardoned from Egpyt until
now," is more easily appreciated than
described.
There is no doubt that the feeling of
equality and brotherly love which pre
vails among the Jews, lo a greater de
gree, perhaps, than among most other
sects, not only originated in, but is fos
tered and renewed by the observances
and services of this day.
