FINANCE & COMMERCE. St. Paul, Nov., 28,1883.—Trade daring the week has been very steady and regular, and as there has been no noticeable change in quotations there is little occasion for comment. Collections have been steady and, on the whole, satisfactory. Grocer ies have been moderately aotive. London layer raisens have been' advanced, ; while dried apples have declined a little. Cof fee is very firm, and last week it was ex pected that this week an advanoe would have to be made, but though all grades are strong and solid, no change is made in quotations, at present. The decline noted last week in eugars still continues. Dry goods are without any speoial change, and business is not over aotive. Season able goods are in some demand and would be more so if we could have continued sharp weather. No dependence, however, can be placed on the weather for ".the rea son that no sooner does a sharp cold day visit us than it is followed by a . mild, al most warm one. Hardware is solid and firm, in good demand, with no reductions in quotations, and collections satisfactory. Like groceries ana all else the amount of sales ia such as to show a good clean in crease in tho total amount of transactions over list year. In drugs, paints and oils there is a good degree of activity, while collec tions are satisfactory. Lard oil, oil lem on and spirits turpentine hive declined slightly, otherwise quotations are un changed. The produce market has fluctu ated a good deal during the week but at last ended a shade lirmsr yesterday than it wa3 a week ago. .Wheat, which started last week at 'J7c, closed yesterday at 98c. Corn during the week advanced lc and yesterday was quoted at 48c. Oats barely held their own and barley stuck at 55c. Eye advanced lc. Ground feed, corn meal and bran were without change. Baled hay weakened a little and so did dressed hogs. The financial situation has not changed in any perceptible degree. Mon ey is still in good demand while remit tances from the interior have not in creased, which shows that the wheat is not moving forward to market. The banks continue to exercise a good deal of pre caution in receiving paper and only that which is perfectly satisfactory is taken. □ General Prtduce. The fruit market begins to feel the . ef f*et of the approaching cold weather and business is rapidly dwindling down to transactions in such goods as can be han dled with safety. Apples are coining in with reasonable freedom and prices aro substantially the same. Wo quote Missouri at $3.50 to $4.00 per barrel; Michigan $3.75 to $4.25 per barrel; Fancy Preminnin $4.50. 11. Direct wire to Chicago and Milwaukee Boards of Trade (Operator in our office. St. Path,, Tuesday, Nov. 27,1888. This has been the most exciting day on the Chicago board of trade for many months past, pork taking the lead in the advance from the start, and closing about $1 higher than yester day's close. The 'strength in pork is due to a report that the French decree a gain- 1 American pork will be removed. Wheat is strong and 2c higher than yesterday's closing, strengthened by the advance in corn and pork, and helped with a rumor of French rentes off a point [French rentes are as bonds in this country I, which gives more indications of war. Corn is _c higher than ye.terday'd close and very strong. The wildest kind of excitement prevailed on the afternoon call board. Trading was stopped several times and order restored before the •'caller" could proceed. We have said right along that it is not safe to short this wheat, and wo still adhere to our no tion, and say again that one had better wait and turn bullish, rather than sell short in the face of all the excitement abroad. Car loads received in Chicago for the past twenty-four hour.-, were as follows: Winter wheat 32; spring wheat 253; corn 288; oats 80.
