!people are improving. They are enterprising- and^j energetic, adopting the fashions, pleasure* and pre-^j vailing eustoirs of the fashionable world with a^celerity not less astonishing than cratifying. Among^I these may be enumerated ehitmona and pic-nics.^and we are looking daily for the small pox or^cholera. The most desirable of these, we believe,^are pic-nics, and it was with joyous hearts that a^party on an equestrian jaunt over the mountains,^on Sat unlay last, discovered a couple of parties^from our little burgh, out at the lakes, enjoying^Heaven a sunshine and Earth's sublimity and gran^^deur and spring-like beantv by the margin of the^crystal waters, beneath the spreuJirij. pities, among^i the modest wild dowers peeping out from grassy^i banks on the summit of the mountain- It was not^: the less pleasing that generous hospitality filled the^I goblets with the vintage of sunnier lands, and we^^ were permitted in the sparkling cup to pledge the^brighter sparkling eyes of Virginia's fairest. It^I came very near disturbing even the equanimity of^' the half dozen uninvited guests, who were all old^enough at.d ugly enough to know betr* r than to go^i to pic nics- The only wonder is that with sscb^magnificent scenery, and all natare in that vicinity^I is evidently gotten up for the special purpose of^: pic-nics. there have been none before- From all^accouuts ^the Bakes^ will become a favorite resort.
TubFirst of this Season.^On Fri-
jday evening ami Saturday morning, three emi-^. grant wagons arrived in Virginia from the States.^' being the only ones that have yet arrived. One be-^j longed t'^ some Iowa men. another to Rev. ('has.^j King, and the other to Mr. Win. Lewis. The latter^j left St. Joe on the 21st ot April, accompanied by C^1 D. King, and in traveling along they finally found^' themselves a portion of a train ot CO wagons destined^for Colorado. Utah, Idaho. Montana. Oregon and^California. They were repeatedly attacked by In^. diaus. but lest only ooe man. a large portion o^' the train stopped in Denver, fearing to attempt the^; trip to the localities they started for, and the bal^; auce jourae;. eil on together until they reached Fort^Bridger, when they divided up. and the parties we^have named, having light wagons, traveled at the^' rate of fort ot more miles a day until they reached^their destination. They report very little emigra^tion on the plains, it having been turned back at^the outset bv the rumored Indian troubles.
