M1oNETERY AND (cuOMMEIRCIAL.-B1usi nees during the pWLt week has been very ac tive. The fall trade, which, in this country, • the heaviest of the season, has fairly com menced, and we meet daily in our streets the familiar faces of outside dealers who are in town on the buy. The near approach of win tr has stiffsned up prices a litt!-, and all sta ples rule a little more firm then last week on account of thbi fact, and the Increase of trade. The leading ruliugs of the market we give below, being as near the correct approximate as is possible to arrive at in this part of the country. Flour being the greatest of all sta ples, is regarded with more interest than any other and the fluctuations of prices create a deeper inquiry from those who regard the ups and downs of canned fruits with little interest. We are compelled to record a great advance in this article. It has been bought up largely by speculators who are not only relieving the market of all surplus, but are buying of the farmers who produce it throughout the country. It has, we understand, advanced four dollars per hundred, and is at present held firm for an advancing market. There is a possibility that four wall advance considerable before the winter comes. Sugar is Arm at a slight advance, and while the transactions have not been large, there is a strong prosp -ct of a rise. Coffee is quiet: very light sales have been made and there is no advance; in fact, coffee closeas much easier than of late. Bacon, min considerable qanmtities, has changed hands, but at no material advance; sellers are offering at market rates and there is nodispo sition on the pert of buyers to accept in any quantities except to fill orders or bills. Dried fruits: The market is be of any and all varieties, except dried apples, of which there is a very large supply. These are held at 25 cts. by speculators on account of speculative inquin es. Coal oil has had quite an advance. It has been taken up by specu lators, who control it to a certain extent at $4, currency. The market closes feverish. Matches rule quiet, owing to the elect of several reports current in regard to the start ing of some manufactories of the article. Some sales have been made at $15 per grosn. The market closes very weak. Cendles are held irm at 40 cts; sympathising with coid oil, the fature market wiU depend much upon the standing of that article. Nais are quiet; no substantial advance. The general market remains comparatively unchanged. Our merchants are to be congratulated upon the trade of the past week, and while the present weather lasts, there is no doubt but that a large quantity of all kinds cf goods will change hands. DAILY MLAIL TO HALKNLA.-A few dray ago the Poet Publishing Company, recegis ing the importance of securing a daily mail to Helena and knowing a petition to the Postmaster General to that efect, would be ;ladly agned by oar citisens, printed a circu lar petition which was sat to the various Post ofces, having their mail distributed bere sad it was also placed s cirrlaties here by Mr. Jobh Poter. SsaL.c-r Scaool.-The school of Pro fessor Stone gave a select exhibition in the lecture-room of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Being apprised of the stair at a late hour, we were able to devote but a few moments to witaming one of the most inter esting scenes which has come under our ob seration in the Territory. The room was crowded, and the exercises ased of smoothly and pleasanuy. We are unacquainted with the names of the yorag ladies and getlemen who took parts, coumquestly we cannot par. ticularise. The performaace throughout evi denced a high order of talent, much study and careful practice. We trust that Protfeor Stone will do greater justice to hip school, and confer a pleasure upon our ctisens, by holding his next exhibition an a more com modious room, and exteuding a more general invitation, for last night's entertainment was really a treat, and would so be considered by our citisens. Dg.| LODGE ITEMS.- From the Inde pendent, which comes a welcome visitor to our sanctum, we gather the following items of Interest from that locality.....On last Wednesday evening the new Court House was dedicated to the uses and purposes for which it was built, by the Deer Lodge bar, by ap propriate ceremonies. It seems to have been a delightful occasion.... There seems to be much complaint in regard to the irregularity of the mail between Virginia City and that place. We are not informed in regard to the cause.... Professor Swallow's excellent mall is still at work upon the Ballarat ore. The yield, so far, has exceeded the Professor's ex pectations, and he not only feels assured that his money has been well invested, but he has rent drawings and plans for more machinery, Cast, which Is to be forwrrded to him in the .ring. HELENA LIBRARY A~e[CIATION.-An adjourned meeting of the above association was held at the Whitlach building at -T o'clock, p. m., November 24th, 1868, which was largely attended. The reports of the committees appointed last Friday evening, were received and the committees discharged. A Constitution was adopted, not dissimilar from the Constitution and by-laws of the Young Men's Association of Chicago. A committee, consisting of C. Hedges, W. F. Sanders, J. W. Whitt-ch and Ben Stickney, jr., was appointed to solicit subecriptions to procure a library. The room committee were given further time to report. The associa tion adjourned to the evening of the 27th inst., at 74 o'clock, November 24th, 1868. W. F. Saomass, Secretary. C. Ranoan, President. Tae HIStORICAL SocIrrY.-The following request of the Historical Society, through its President, shows that the incorporation has some vitality, though it has been torpid these many days. The Posr cheerfully complies with the request: To ans MoArrsa Post Pt'rLIsuING COMPANY: Gentlemen: The Historical Society, in corporated under ea Act of the first Legisla tire Assembly, is desirous of preserving the files of the wkly papers of the Territory. Thre teams are from Bitter Root Valley, where the apples are raisd. They are of sev eral splendid varieties sad wall compete in sise, grade and Savor with those raised in the western states. Mr. Corbin has been devoting his time and attention to the examimatioa of Gold Hill, a rich and proll quarts dsriet, two miles north of Diamomd City. He is the disaoever and owner of several very valua ble leds in that locality, eaaag which we may mention the Jack Casement. Bob Tail, Western Star, and T. C. Durant. "hey are all well deined, of good width, and have bee sufciently developed to give vidence a are excellence. It is the purpose of Mr. Corbin to have his mill in full operation on the T. C. Durant lode by July next-by that time he will have sufcient quarts takeL from the lead to keep the min is costant operation at least six months. Mr. Corbin is a man of wealth who has chosea rather to come out among the mines himself before investing, and has, by his own laborious investigation, demonstrated the fact to his satisfaction that the leads will pay. We wish him every pos sible succem in his enterprise. DEPARHT'ttE.-The next coach takes from our midst one of the brightest of the legal lights of Montana, Wm. A. Chumasero, Esq., who goes East on a visit daring the winter months. Mr. Chumasero came to Vir ginia City at an early day, with a high repu tation for legal attainments. Since that tame he has, with the growth and increased pros perity of the Territory, built up an immense practice, which is commenurate with his high standing as a member of the Malema Bar. He posesses rare aility as a pleader, and ome of the best legal mrinds in the Territory, deals in the reason and facts of law instead of the fanciful deductions, and seeks in his practice to ever be on the side upon which justice stands as a colleague. While we re gret his departure, we are pleased that he in tends returning in the spring with his family. GREAT QUARTZ SALE.-One of the largest transactions in mines which ever trans pired in the Territory took place yesterday in our city, some seven or eight hundred feet of the celebrated Park Mane having been bought by J. W. Whitlals, the pleaeer quarts man of Montana, of Bywater. Kennedy and oth er. The Park Mine has for several years at tracted great attention on account of its ex ceeding richnam, and has been pronounced a Arst clam mine by the beet authorities. Mr. Whttlatch has now substantially endorsed the mine with his cash, and will, with his usual energy, proceed at once to develop his ledge by extensive works. He is now the owner of 1,060 feet on this miane, and, very naturally, "don't care whether it snows or not."
