THECHINESE AND PNEUMONIA.
ABreezy Budget of New* Touching^Upon Matters of General Interest^in Two Great Mining Camps.
1'UIL1I*hi Ru, Feb. K!.-[Sperit,^ Corre^^spondence of the Independent |-VV nils^our two usually (itilet towns over here,^rhUtpsbura; aud Uraoite, are not In the^throes of excitement, there are several mat^u*rs MamiN a K'wd deal of attention,^principal anion* them beio^ the spread of^the dread disease pueumoni* and the reeeut^CUlneae raid, which resulted so disastrous^^ly. I'pon the latter topic there Is much^surmise as to how it may terminate. The^coroner's inquest, alter returning an uu^satisfactory verdict, were sent a second^time b^ the aeiinK coroner, the justice of^the peace, U^ reach a more dehnite com lu-^siou than at first. The hual result was that^the Chinaman came to his death from a
tistolshot disenabled by a person un-^nowu to the Jury. The investigation at^the inquest elicited the fact that only two^shuts were tired, by Deputy Ueo. Opp and^his companion, while a miner in an adjoin^1UK cabin el aims he heard three shots. In^tne first iepurt it w;ta Kant that the Clilna-^uieu drew knives, while tne celestials testi^^fied they were asleep when the fracas^occurred. In the two shots tired, one^of them. It Is claimed, passed^through one Chinaman's leg, aud^haltfe in the lieadof auotlier killiughim^almost Instantly. A third Chinaman is^also disabled, but will be all right shortly,^while the one who received the bullet lu^the leg is in a very low condition and may^be dead before this letter reaches you. At^least he is given up by his physician.^Br siy Opp i* at large under *5.0Uu bonds,^but it is r Jinored he has not secured surety^as yet. Sheriff fcd Moure has l^eeli here^the paat lew days aud feels very badly that^the thing should ever have happened.^Every Intelligent cituen t^^th here and at^Wraiute, look upon the raid us a most tool^hardy act, not that they aftVI any regard^for the Chinamen, but consider that as^long as the United Mates tolerates them^they should he protected. A ^i^Mongolians from Jiutte have heen heie the^past tew days Investigating the case. I hey^concluded their lalMirs last night and de^^parted tor home and propose to employ^good legal talent to tight the case. 1 lie^elttseoa geueraliy regret ttie iKvurrance.
TMKI'M Kt'MOM A M'AKK.
Theform of pneumonia existing at tiran-^lte is thought by some to be epidemic, nut^physicians do not regard it so. but attribute^the cause either to the water or the atmos^^phere. The town lies in a gulch, and not^not withstanding it is over a thousand trot^higher than the burg, the thermometer reg^^isters fully fifteen degrees wanner. Hard^^ly a brcatfi of fresh air finds its way into^the hollow and in the portion of the town^where the disease Is prevalent the houses^or bunks are closely huddled together. The^death rate, however, is grossly exaggerated.^The report sent from here that tweuty-tive^deaths occurred in one day is untrue. Yes^^terday there were two deaths recorded aud^the total number since the disease became^malignant w ill not amount to more than^ten persons. There is urgent need for^some immediate action as there is no telling^how the disease may result It is not epi^^demic, however. Several families have^moved from Oranite to escape. As yet not a^single case has appeared here that could be^attributed to being caught from the town^on the hill, notwithstanding the daily in^^tercourse baiWSj^ the two places is quite^large. Dr. IMessants, who recently ar^^rived at (i ran He, dots not seem able to^check the disease or hud out Its cause. It^results fatally in nearly every case, aud^there are some who believe it is not pneu^^monia at all.

ItIs quite noticeable that since Hutte be^^gan to rid itself of the rounder element^many of those who had to leave have found^their way here. They lounge around at all^hours and never attempt to work, and as^the gambling tables do not run steadily^through the month, especially at this time,^It causes one to think how they subsist.^That they * roll^ people ts beyond doubt.^Two or three instances of this kind have^come to notice within the pad two weeks,^but lacking lufflcient evidence no arrests^have been made. Our uight watchman^tells that only a few nights ago a miner^cashed a check for $75 and received gold in^exchange. He was seen with two rounder**,^and about an hour afterwards the officer^found him lying iu the mini in a stupor,^lie had $20 with him still. The two round^^ers, who were known not to have a cent In^a mouth, treated in a saloon, each one^planking out $20 shiners. Our people are^agitating this minder question, aud If It^does not result iu the ,^. 7 77 edict being put^forth withm a very short time 1 shall be^surprised.

Theoutlook for a busy season Is very^encouraging. Contemplated structures,^and all to be of brick, two stories high, are^heard of on all sides. Keal estate brings a
5oodfigure here. Last week Alderman^as. Kvans of Hutte paid $5,000 for a comer^lot on Main street, just opposite Jos. A.^Hyde's new bank, on the same side of the^street. Mr. Kvans proposes erecting a^building and starting a grocery house^there. Mine host Kaiser is having an iron^porch placed around the second story of^fits hotel. He is talking of putting up a^large builduig on Mum street, a block be^low the hotel, and on the opposite side.^The Kaiser brothers aie among the others^who will erect a building, the upper part^to be used a* a public hall or theatre. The^Hi ^ in liros. a Co. of the MaII have pur^^chased a couple ot lots an J pro^^pose to branch out on a more^extended scale. It has often^been said, thst you can judge a town by^the papers it supports, and if this Is any^criterion, we have Indeed a prosperous^town, as we a!so have an excellent and^prosperous newspaper. Win. Welnstein a^few days ago purchased the Lawrence^building adjoining Livingston's store, and
healso proposes putting up a new struct^^ure, ai^name.
