l,onduncorrespondence: The good old^bishop of Llocolu stands * tair chsuce o(^Kuiiii; to prtaon as a r^LUrtoua martyr. Tub-^be Interest in his remarkable trial, which^: ftf.tn tblt wwk, ex tend a far outside the^domain of rhurcl)-going people. tSyuipa-^thtzera wltb m^- Irish cause are column It^the front and are urging that If William^O'Brien must don s convict** tuit for viu^latlng laws whlcb he believes to be unjust.^It Is only fair to serve an Episcopal bisbop^in the astue w*y. Another clsaa of -^wboareclaiuontiK toiee the bishop bro glit^to Judgment are a large number of discon^^tented laymen who have been driven from^tbelr pariah churches by ritualistic innova^^tions of which the accused bisbop is an^ardent advocate. The hue and cry ^^t ^per^^secution^ raised by the bishop's boats of^friends does not drown the call for a thor^^ough trial and a fair verdict
Thecharges against tbe blahop of Lin^^coln are, brought by an auctioneer in bis^diocette. in suUstance they allege, that^when be was officiating as bisbop, and as^tbe principal celebrant In the holy com^^munion, be did the following acts in con^^travention of tbe law of the church: (I)^II- used lighted candles on the communion^table a- a matter of ceremony only and^when tbe same were uoi wanted for giving^light; (2) he mixed water with the sacra^^mental wine and conaecrated the same; (8)^while reading tbe prayer of consecration^he stood with his hack to the people, so^that tbey could not see him break the bread^and take the cup into his bands; (4} he per^^mitted tbe ^Agnus Del,^ or the hymn^^Lamb of i.o^l, that takest away tbe^sins of tbe world/' to be sung imme^^diately after tbe prayer of consecration^and before th^ reception of the elements:^(5) while pronouncing tbe absolution and^benediction, conapicuously and ceremoni^^ously having both bia bands elevated, aud^looking towards the congregation, he made^with his hands the sign of the cross; (S)^Immediately after tbe holy communion,^and as a continuous part thereof, he per^^formed tbe ceremony of ablution, I. e., of^pouring winesml water Into the paten and^chfthre, which had been used in the ad^^ministration of the holy communion, and^then himself drank up the wine and water^in tbe presence of the congregation; and^(7) during the first portion of tbe service,^down to the ordering of the bread and^wine and before the prayer of consecration,^he stood on i i ^ west aide of the holy table,^and not on the north side thereof.
Forthese otfenaes the blahop was sum^^mon ed to appear before tbe archbishop or^bis vicar-general In *i^irituala,in the hall of^his palace at hambetli, to answer ^to cer^^tain articles, beads, positions and interro-
Eationato be objected and adminiatered to^trn touching and concerning his soul's^health and the lawful correction and re^^formation of bis manners and excesses,^^and more particularly for having offended^against the laws ecclesiastical in tbe^above manner.
Thetrial revives a jurisdiction that has^not been exercised since 16V6, when the^Bishop of St David's was tried for simi^^lar offenses. It was a picturesque scene in^the Lambeth palace when Dr. King (the^accused bisbop) rose to face his Judges.^The other bishops. In their rich robes,^leoked very grave and formidable. But^Dr. King has a calm, dignified bearing, and^a rich, melodious voice, which wooed the^close attention of bis judges when he be-
f[anbis formal protest agalust tbe proceed^ng. Charged with Koinanlsh tendencies,^the bishop of Lincoln began bis defense^by asserting his unadulterated Protes^^tantism. What he wanted was more^bishop^ to try him. lie had the arch^^bishop, tbe bisbop of London, the biabop^of Salisbury and the bisbop of Winchester,^but he wanted the) entire upper bouse of^convocation tor the province of Canter^^bury. Tbli would take almost all the^chief pastors from their dioceses to consider^his case, liut the bisbop urged bis cause^so strongly that the trial was adjourned for^one month to give time for consideration.^It is not conaldered likely that tbe motion^will be irranted.

Mr.C. S. Uushnell, of New Haven, an^old friend of John Ericsson, has been in^^terviewed about him by tbe New Haven^Palladium, Here la part of what he said:^^Mr. Kricsson, soon after our acquaint^^ance, let me take the Monitor plans. He^had vowed that he would never go to^Washington wltb the plsns because tbe^government owed him 812,000 for bis en^^gineering work in constructing the pro^^peller l'rinceton. tbe first propeller ever^built, but would not pay it. 1 took tbe plana^to Mr. Welles, secretary of the navy, and^also to Mr. Seward, secretary of state. Mr.^Seward gave me a note to President^Lincoln, aud on the following day^I called on the president He said^be did not know much about ves^^sels, save Hat boats, but he agreed to^meet me the next day wltb the board of^naval commissioners. Well, at this meet^^ing President Lincoln heard a great deal^of adverse criticisms on the part of the na^^val ofliceiM, but he said that the idea re^mindi d Mai of the expression of the girl^who, when she put her foot In her stick^^ing, said: 'There's something in it' Then^1 reijuented the board to make a favorable^report, that there might be a vessel con^^structed frcm tbe plans. Two were In^favor and one was opposed, and 1 could not
Sersuadehim to consent. 1 was rather^iscouraged, and 1 saw but one way to se^^cure the adoption of tbe plan, and that^was to bring K^ lesson before tbe board 1^left Washington for New York that night.^I saw Kr lesson the next morning, and,^by the way, 1 was admitted by^the servant-girl, Ann, who has been In^Mr. Kricssou's service from that time^until tbe present 1 succeeded in persuad^^ing- him to break bis vow and return wltb^me to Washington, telling him that all that^1 believed was In tbe way of the acceptance^of the plan was the fact that one of tbe^members of (be board did not think that be^understood the idea well enough to give it^bis approbation. Bo Mr. Krirsson returned^wltb me, and under the influence of the^man's enthusiasm aud eloquence the^board became convinced of tbe feasibility^of - the project and gave It hearty approval.^Thus spproved the plan was carried out,^and the Monitor was built. 1 have been^associated for the past year with Mr.^Knrsson In tbe construction of the De^^stroyer, and he has left bis plana for the^vesael in such perfect shape that his^subordinate can go rlcrht on with the^work and complete what Is to be an abso^^lutely impregnable vessel, capable of de^^stroying any or all of tbe vessels of the^world, monitors la*.luded, and which will^undoubtedly be accepted by the govern^^ment as a ^tyie of vessel for the entire^coast Mr. Kricsson was certainly a most^wonderful man. The Dictator was com^^posed ot :t,oui^different parts, al the crea^tlon of a man's Drain, and his designs for^tbe vessel, sent to the d^aughtsmen at^Delatneter's, were ao very explicit that not^a plan or a plate had to be changed In tbe^alfghtest.
MrHusbnell is one of tbe executors of^Mr. hricsson'i will.

HelenaHerald, March 26: The after^^noon dispstches announce the appointment^of Hon. U K. White, of Dillon, to be gov^^ernor of Montana Mr. White Is a first-^class man, a gentleman whom it Is a pleas^^ure to know, a stauuch republican and will^doubtless make a governor acceptable to^all Monlauiatia, He was not an applicant^for the posltiou^In fact, waa one of tuv^multitude of republicans endorsing Mr. L.^11. Herahfield. The Herald extends to Mr.^White Its congratulations and assures htm^of its hearty good will.
Hereaud now, however, we most earn^^estly protest, in behalf of the vast majority^of Republicans in Montana, against the^uncalled for Interference and tbe undue In^^fluence exerted by tiuaaell H Hsrrlson In^defeating tbe appointment of Mr Herah^^field. Dispatches sent out from Washing^ton assume that on account of the strug H^between Mr. Herahfield and Mr. Harrison's^candidate, it was deemed beat to select a^compromise man. There has t^een no con^^tention in the part) over the appointment^of governor. The republicans of Montana^were relatively a unit for Mr. Herahfield^and against their expressed wlah Kussell^Harrison arrayed himself and succeeded,^not In having his candidate, Mr. McCutch-^eon, appointed, but in forcing Mr. Herah^^field from the tield. If President Harrison^had fully understood the situation he^would never have allowed his son^whose action in this matter will effectually^handicap any political ambition be might^have had In the future in Montana, to dic^^tate who should or who should not be gov^^ernor of the territory. Vouug Mr. Harri^^son has had bis say, but he cannot atay the^protest that will to-day come up from^ninety-nine one hundredths ot the republi^^cans of Montana at this unwarranted and^unwise action of the president'a son.
