TOEDAILY INDEPENDENT: HELENA. SUNDAY MORNING. MAY lit. Js,*^i. SOCIETYJiOSSIP. S.riking Contrast Between the^Rustler of the West and He^of the Effete East. Ho* Helena s Society is Free Fror^8ome of the Drawbacks of OldCommunities. ConingPI. in. - in ITIrkly Pear ^ aevon-^ii.hi. it.-- a^ Kntertainers-Personal^Mention-The y^frj Cgrnr. Howdoes he live .' Is ^ question more^propounded in the iaru^- eastern cities, than^the west. But bere the word rustler sijmi-^fii s a profession in itself. It may be ap^^plied to no particular branch of trade or^calling and yet include all from the art of^Taporisiug a man into buying a book,^dcwn to the profession of real estate. In^New York, Boston and other large cities^there are hundreds of young men well con^^nected, college bred, social parasites who^have no profession, nor any visible means^of support, but who nevertheless belong to^^well clubs, dress faultlessly, go every^^where, and are apparently well received^by all, save those fond foolish matrons^who have a plentitude ef marriageable^daughters and a scarcity of cash. Ifow do these men live'.' By their brains ^^Well hardly I By their wits f Well. ye*'. Vutthe most part they resemble that^^porous or fibrous substance regarded as^of the nature of a compound animal found^adhering to rock, shells, etc., under water.^^^vide Webster. Oaly they are usually^found adhering to richer friends and by^this mean* very generally manage to keep^themselves above water, sometimes getting^wine. They are generally attuned men of^the world, who can play on all the weaker^strings of their fellow beings without ever^making a discord, and can desceni them^^selves from modern heroics to the level ot^the moth-eaten mass ot mouldering senti^^ment, without turning a hair or losing a^dollar, bociety tolera'es tfiem because^they are always useful; they can get in a^theatre party, order dinners, lead a Her^^man, or borrow 310 with the most perfect^sang fioid and good nature. Socially^they are a walking encyclopedia^of useful information. When Mrs.^ti^tth re, who is on the ragged^edge of social happiness, wants to^give a ball and have a few good names^added to her list, she calls in one of these^gentlemen and he calls upon her purse the^result being that each otnains their end. Fortunatelytor Helena there is no^necessity for the .s.-rv ices of such agents.^There is no marked social line here over^which even monej dare not tread. Money-^will buy almost anything except manners,^and there is no use asking how Mr. Soli^^tary tiulch made his money, sumo- to say^he has got it. His family are received^everywhere; he do. ^ in t trample upon the^ABC of social et v^tte. but entertains^handsomely, forbears from eating with his^knife, and barely, if ever, passes tooth^^picks around with hi^ dessert InHelena we have a set^a sort of upper^crust, but the contents of the pie is in^many instance' rjuite as palatable, and we^have no Ward McAllister as yet to stir up^the contents and keep the pastry hot. Whatis done in Helena in the way of^social en'ertainment i^ very well done,^but not o'ten ov-rdone. The ^ Germans, re^^ceptions, etc , axe in good taste, and while^we may not all be very clear about our an^^cestry or from which side of the tree we^were originally lopped, f e are not at the^present time bent upon either editing a^peerage or getting up a centennial qua^^drille PASTAND FUTI BJC Sociallythings have been verv dull, and^beyond a prospective trip to the gate ot the^mountain by w ay of commemorating Deco^^ration day there is very little in view. Oneot two gentlemen, notably Mr. Will^Wallace, Jr. and Ed Knight. Jr , are ar^^ranging a trip to the upp.-r end of the Mis^^souri canyon near ttie muu'h of the Prick^ley Tear, and with this end in view they^rode out through mist and ram'he other^evening to see if the roads were in good^order. This will without doubt prove to^be the picnic ot th I early summer, for not^only is the younger element going to turn^out in force, t^nt also the younger marrieii^set, Messrs. and Mesdames Ashby, Hunt,^Buck, Bartxiur. Jerome, Davis. Ilumlnrrt.^Kennett. Ili'l. Knight et al hav ing already^Signified tl ei- lutention of joining. The^start will probably be made at about 6:30^a. m. and as there is no hotel in the neigh^borhood it will pertorce of circumstances^be a genuine picnic, and barring rain anu^insects a very jolly time is assured. Otherand smaller parties will doubtless^be organized, but the hitherto unexplored^region ot the Miss ur; canyon wnl be^treated to a bird's eye view of Helena's^elite, while the aforesaid elite can in return^amuse themselves by decorating or in other^words pointing the canyon red. TheSilver Bow club in Butte are royal^entertainers, and never was their hospital^^ity more thoroughly appreciated than by^those members ot the Encore club who re^^main) d over a;ter the performance last^i^aturday night Mess's I.ee Mantle, Wal^^ter Kelly. J. Lansing. Geo. Irvin. B. B^Thayer, J. V. Long and C. W. Goodale^did everything in thtir power to make the^^wee Mil a' hours^ seem shorter, i-ome^good tales were told, some ol ^ chestnuts^revived, some operatic selections and a tew^selections 1 never heard at the opera were^sung. The ale was good and the guests^were not long in appreciating the fact Mr.J. Lansing, of Bntte, who is some^^what of an astrologer, says the sun sets^later and rises earlier in Butte than in any^other town in this state. Of course it de-^1^ : :- a good deal in what state you make^the observation. Th- courtesies extended^by Mr. P. P. Shelby to Messrs. Luke,^Clii.ds. Hill, Wai er and Martin which^were so ably carried out by Mr. M. P. Ben^^ton on the return trip from Butte Sunday^morning last, w ere thoroughly appreciated^by all. and 1 think I voice the sentiments^of the entire party in thus publicly ac^^knowledging the hospitality. Therewill be a renewal of hostilities on^the tennis ground towards the end of the^month, or whenever the weather settles a^bit several ladies on the east side have^signified their intei.tion of joining the club^as soon as the east side club can be got in^order. It has txen suggested that a four-^handed match between Misos Kane and^Nicholson on one side and Messrs. Carpen^^ter and K S. Hill on the other would prove^an interesting event TheCricket club will hold a meeting on^Thursday afternoon m \t at op m . at Mr.^Horace B Kane's office in the Thompson^block. Officers will lie then elected and a^committee appointed to select a suitable^ground tor pract c.. and in all probability^cocoanut matting will be tried for making^a practice cricket. This is in constant use^in Australia and has always proved an^excellent substitute for turf. All gent e-^men Interested in cricket and desirous of^joining the Helena Cricket club, and those^members of the club who intend to renew^their membership this year, are eam.stly^requested to be hand and to understand^that 5 p. m. does not mean 5:30. Alacrosse club is about to be organized^in this city, and a meeting has be. n called^with a view to aiK-ertaining how many^players there may be in the city. The^meeting is to take place in Harmonia Hall^this aflernon. personalvnd general. T.C. Power and bis son Charles have^returned from their eastern trip, but they^paid Helena a very rl-eting visit, leaving^again for the east last night, where they^will rejoin Mrs. Power and a European trip^is then contemplated, which will bring^them back to Helena about September.^Charley Power says he thinks he will like fe continent almost as well as Helena. It^w.ll be his first trip over the big pond. Mrs.Frank Shaffer and Mrs. George S.^Tracey left for the east Thursday evening.^They will make Chicago their headquar^^ters. Crosbyleft for New York on^He will be gone about one EdwardF.^Wednesday,^month. HoraceB.^Wednesday. Kanereturned from St Louis^Mr. Kane and Miss Mary-^Kane are spending a week at Great Falls. MissFrankie Horst returned to Butte on^Thursday. She was accompanied by Mr.^Ben King, who expects to remain in the^great mining camp for about two weeks. Mr.and Mrs. M Ados, the fortunate^owners of the Spotted Horse mine, are ir^the city, and it Is their ultimate inteiit.oi^to take up their residence here. Thewedding of Miss Kate Childs and^Judge Bach will take place early in June,^and a more popular wedding will never^be celebrated in Helena, owing to the per^^sonal popularity of the contracting parties. MissFrankie J urgens, who has been vis^iting Dr. and Mrs. King, of Marysville, for^the past week, has returned home. MissBertie Kumley is back again from^Butte, where she had a most delightful^visit Mrs.Dr. Hersey has returned to Bil^^lings. With her characteristic good nature,^however, she stayed over in Butte on Sun^^day last and sang in the Baptist church choir. Thesudden and unexpected death of^Mrs. Uill'sfather, Mr. Frederick W. Foote,^in New York, lsst week, will, of course,^prevent Mr. S. Hill from getting up the^contemplated performance of ^Our Boys,^^in aid of an organ for the Episcopal^church. There is no reason, however, why^the good work should not be carried out by^some one else. Ayoung man of this city, who has for^some time past contemplated matrimony,^when asked the other day when congratu^^lations would be in order replied: ^The^girl indeed is willing, but her bank ac^^count is weak. Atthe progressive jack straw party^given by Mrs. C. Ellis the other evening.^Miss Blaine was presented with a gaily^decorated broom as a mark of her inability^to remove straws without trembling, while^her sister. Miss Ella, got a very prettily^decorated Koyal Worcester vase filled with^choicer! ^wers for having proved herself a^most dexterious adjuster of straws. Mr.^Velee won the gentleman's prize, consist^^ing of fifteen choice Havannas, and thus^a very pleasant evening ended in smoke. Mr.G. G. Martin left for B zeman las:^night, where he will meet bis wife and^family and visit some friends. Mr. Martin^expects to return to Helena on Monday,^and as soon as he can obtain a suitable^house his family will settle here. Mr.Frank M Dell and Mr. A. B. Meyer,^of Minneapolis, passed through Helena on^Friday on their way back east They pro^pose to take in the Park, however, before^returning. These gentlemen have for years^been engaged in the coal business in India-^anapolis, but natural gas has blown them^out west in search of a better market notesand vjperies. Handed the young lady cashier a^silver dollar in payment of my bill. Before^giving me my change she looked at the dol^^lar very critically, and finally cast it into^the money drawer with apparent reluc^^tance. I endured the ordeal without com^^plaint but told my friend afterward that I^hated to be taken for a counterfeiter, and^asked why that girl should look with suspic^^ion on coins that I gave her.as I distinctly re^^membered her doing several times of late.^His reply was prompt and to the^point, ^Because, my boy,^ said^he. ^that girl has to make up out of her^own pocket the losses of all kinds that she^miv sustain, either by accepting bad coins^or oth-Twise. BABIESoF THE WORLD. NearlyThirty--. ^ ^ ii Million or The^pear l.ii-rj Year. Ithas been computed that between So.(WO. 000and S7,000.0it habies are born into the worldeach y ear. The rate of pr^ ^duction is^therefore about seventy a minute, or rather^more than one for every beat of the clock.^With the one a minute calculation every^reader is familiar, out it is not every one who^stops to calculate what this means when it^comes to year's supply. And it will proba^^bly, therefore, startle a good many persons^to find on the authority of a writer in a ..-pita;that could the infants of a single^year be ranged in line in cradles seven^deep they would go round the globe. We^have the ingenious conclusion also that^supposing the little ones to grow up and^the sexes to be about equally divided we^should have an army a hundred times as^large as the forces of the British empire,^with a wife in addition to every soldier.^The same writer htoks at the matter in a^still more picturesque iight He imagines^the babies being carried past a given^point in their mothers' charge one by^one and the procession being kept up^continuously night and day until the last^comer in the twelve-month has passed by.^A sufficiently liberal rate of speed is al^^lowed, but even with these babies in arms^going past twenty a minute the reviewing^officer would only have seen a sixth part of^the infantine host file onward by the time^he had been a year at his post In other^words, the babe that had to be carried^when the work began would be^able to toddle onward itself when^a mere fraction of its comrades bad^reached the saluting post: and when the^year's supply of babies was tapering to a^close, there would be a rear guard, not of^infants, but of romping girls and boys.^They would have passed, in fact out of the^maternal arms Into the hands of the school^teacher. Every moment of nearly seven^years would be required to complete this^grand parade of those little ones that in the^course of a twelvemonth begin to play their^part in the first age of man.
