Adistressing accident occurred at Wins-^low, on the Montana Central, at 5:52 yes^^terday afternoon, when J. E. Coulter, dep^^uty mine inspector and ex-city marshal of^Butte, was struck by the pilot of engtnt^No. 12 on the Pacific express. He was^struck in the face, hurled about twenty-^feet away, where he was picked up.brought^to Helena and taken to St. Peter's hospital^He never regained consciousness and died^at V:15 last evening. Fromeye witnesses the following de^tails are learned. Mr. Coulter was on his^way to Helena to qualify as deputy mine^inspector. When the train was side^^tracked at Winslow, a station one mile^south of Alhauibra, some of the passen^gers stepped off and began picking pepper^mint, which grows near the bank of the^track. Mr. Coulter was banded^a piece of the mint which^he greatly relished, and remarking that^it was the finest be ever saw, stepped off^the rear platform of the last car, where he^was standing with others, and began gath^^ering some for himself. While thereabout^a minute the whistle of the approaching^train blew, and Mr. Coulter said: ^Here^she comes.^ Those who were near him^started for the train and had plenty of time^to cross as the Pacific express was in sight,^about 300 yards away. Mr. Coulter never^looked towards the train. J. T. Ilriscoli^called out to him, ^Get a gait on you,^^while others told him to fiurr)- up. lie re^^plied: ^Oh, I'm all right. I'll get there.^^lie was slowly walking up the embank^^ment alongside the main track. The train^came thundering along and only a few^yards distant from the unfortunate man,^who was heedless of its close proximity^to nim. The situation was a^terrible one, and to those who were^looking on, wondering what possessed^the man. ^ ^ne passenger threw up both his^hands and beckoned and shouted to him,^^For (rod's sake go back.^ He looked at^the person who spoke, but was still mov^^ing, and while in the act of turning his^face to look at the approaching train he^was struck clear in the face by a projecting^corner of the pilot head. Mr. Coulter was^hurled about twenty feet distant onto the^embankment. Those who saw what hap^pened were pale and breathless, and it^seemed an age until the train went by,^giving them a chance to reach the poor fel^^low. The first man to reach him asked^him it he could speak, but the man had^every appearance of being dead. He lay^in a helpless heap, bis face resting on bis^breast. Blood flowed rapidly trom his^ear, noae and mouth. tile had two^gashes in his face, one extending^from the eye within a fourth of an^incn of the temple; the other gash was in^the right upper side of the mouth arid nose.^He was carried to the baggage car and^showed after a time signs ot life. He be^^gan to breathe rapidly and was able to^move his arms. His head was resting on^a mail sack. Repeatedly he w as spoken^to but no answer came. -His left eye was^closed, while his right eye protruded from^the socket. About twenty minutes after^he was laid in the car be began moaning.^His face wore an expression of intense suf^^fering and the sight was heartrending.^His agony increased as Helena was^reached and he moved his limbs restlessly.^Dr. Sligh was at the depot and had the vic^^tim placed ou a stretcher and taken to St.^IVter's hospital. Drs. Treacy and^Sligh then worked to see what^could be done for him. Ether was^applied to the sufferer, while Dr. Sligh in^^vestigated the injury. ^Nothing can be^done,^ he said, ^the superior maxillary is^crushed and the skull is fractured at the^base. Dr. Treacy investigated and concur^^red in Dr. Sligh's views, and all there was^left to do was to await the moment when^the end, which was sure to come, would^arrive. For about two hours the deceased^rested on a table, his heart failing as the^minutes crept on. Capt.J. He shook hands with his at^^torney, Mr. Balliet, and took his seat,^William Wallace, Jr., who prosecuted^Bryson to conviction, was present. Mr.Balliet stated to the c4^urt that he^wanted a postponement of the motion for a^new trial for the reason that he had dis-^covered new evidence which had to be pre^^pared in the shape of affidavits, and also^thought that the wearing apparel of Annie^Lundstrom should be produced in court as^he hoped to prove by the clothing what the^affidavits he had or would file attempt to^show. Mr.Wallace opposed the reqnat on the^gn ind that the defendant had had plenty^of t.nie to prepare for the hearing and that^the defense might be postponed in^^definitely if it was to wait on^every new bit of evidence discovered-^Judge Blake inquired on what grounds^the defense would ask for a new trial, and^Mr. Balliet replied that the motion would^be on the rulings of the court in regard to^the competency- of jurors and also the^right of the defendant to demand a new^trial from the judge who sat on the case as^more qualified than a successor who had^not tried it. An agreement was finally-^reached that the hearing should be post^^poned until S o'clock to-day. Lastevening Mr. Balliet filed an affi^^davit swore and subscribed to by Mrs.^Alex McConnell, who alleges that on the^day of the murder ahe saw a woman^dressed as Mrs. Lundstrom was dressed the^day she disappeared in company with a^short, thici. heavy-set man with broad^shoulders, shorter than the woman herself,^and with black hair. Mrs. McConnell^makes oath that she saw the woman whom^she believes to have been Annie Lund^^strom with a man other than Bryson the^day she was murdered. Mrs. McConnell^lives within about 1.000 feet of the pros^^pect hole where Annie Lundstrom's body^was found. MaTHtSONa STEELE.
