THEDAILY INDEPENDENT: HELENA. SATURDAY MORNING. JUNE 1, 1889. A REMARKABLE DREAM. MAJ. PAYNE'S STRANGE STORY. TheBungling of the Bald Knobber*'^Executioners Foretold in a^Vision. Ozark^urr^^ n.deter M. Louis Globe-^DeibucrM- Of ail th- dreamt that had tor^their ^'ttiBK* Hallow* architecture and^itrantfulalioo b^rT^r^. that of M^j O. M.^Payne, senior counsel for the Bald Knob^^ber-. ti:e niabt befi.re the hanging was the^most remarkable on account of it* piienom-^ensl prophetic character. Kromthe day Bill Walker was sentenced^to ban^( b^ Judge ilubbud, in April, Iw,^Mr. Payne had said he would never see^one of the Knobbers executed. The^sympathetic attorney could not bear to^bear the verdict acainxt young Walker^announced by the j ,ry, but left the court^room tu tears *oiue minute* before^the event, having anticipated the^nndinir of the twelve men who^had retired to deli Derate on the fate of the^youthful Knobber. On the Thursday af^^ternoon before the execution Attorney^Payne attended the baptism ot Bui Walk^^er and bid the three condemned men a hual^farewell. In a few minutes after leaving^the jail Mr. 1'ayne went aw ay from Ozark^and did not return until the next day after^the hanging. No one in town seemed t^know anything about the missing lawyer's^hiding place, but every body undereUiod^that he had gone away to avoid witnessing^the tragic spectacle so long dreaded and^fought against. OnThursday night Mr. I'ayne stopped^at the house of one Pruitt, a friend living^several miles south of Ozark. He did not^retire to bed till late at night, and then^found no restful sleep, so busy were his^thoughts In reviewing the tragic history of^his Bald Knobber clients, ximetnue *tter^midnight exhausted nature yielded U^ the^demands for rest, and the lawyer slept a^few minutes. No l^-gal triumphs and ver^^dicts of ^not guilty^ gave happy^dreams to the d.-teat^d K:iol^ber coun^^sel, however. The grim realit les^with which he had ben wrestling for^over two )^-^[^ pit^^e.) n wild, fantastic^mockery betore his ejes. lie every^horrid form ot the hangman's ghastly art,^and scores of revolting gallows scenes^which only dreaming lancy could conjure^up. In the morning the unretresned attor^^ney arose from his bed. and told Mr. Bruitt^a part of a dream in which he saw the trap^door of ihe gallows fall with the three^doomed Knnhl^ers. and the rope around Bill^Walker's neck break, letting the young^man drop to the ground, tie told his host^that he saw Bill Walker hanged the sec ind^time after the failure of the first attempt. Mr.Pruitt came to Ozark on Friday and^remained in town until after the hanging.^On returning home m the afternoon he re^^lated to bis friend Payne the events of the^hanging, especially the horrors attending^the death of Bill Walker, which, excepting^the breaking of the rope, had been so^clearly seen in the lawyer's dream the^night before. THELOST ATLANTIS Formany centuries thers haa been t^tradition of a long lost island called Atlantis. Thetireek geograpeis located it ia^the Atlantic Ocean, west of tha norths^west part of Africa and the Pillars ol^Hercu.es. The sea-kings of Atlantis are^^aid to have invaded Eurojie and Africa,^and to have been defeated by the Athen^^ians. Allthe legends agree that it was a vast^Wand, of inexhaustible, resources, and^inhabited t^v a race of superior people.^For ages this island has existed o;ily in^legendary lore. But now, when the light^of modern research is turned full upon^the investigation, behold theloet Atlantis^at our very ^I.j..rs. Sothe bigoted medical fraternity goes^groping about in the dark, seeking for^an Atlantis or Keculapius, when if they^would investigate, they would behold^the lost Atlantis at their -very door.^With their ancient text book, a case ol^physic, a pa|^er in their waistcoat giving^them license to practice, experiment and^dose with their injurious drugs, . outer-^lie and perform unnecessary acts, with^no person or law to hold them account^^able, they continue their bigoted, un^^justified practice, staring into vacancy,^and imagining that they see in them^^selves an I isculapius. Wrappedin ancient bigotry, they are^crying out against all improvements that^have I ^ eti ni de in medical science.^They denounce any new idea advanced^by a layman or an opposition school as a^fraud. Why I!evai]*eImmanitv will not be bene^^fited^ Not at all^ but because their^^js i ialisin did not make the discovery. Yettli. v concede that there is no rem^^edy known to their materia niedica that^will cure an advanced kidney malady^and the di^-eas-s arising therefrom^al^^though many of them know from crown^^ing proof that Warner's Safe Cure will^^but unscrupulously treat symptoms and^call them a disease, when in reality they^know tiiev are hut symptoms. Afew of the more honest physicians^admit that Warner's Sate Cure is* a valu^^able remedy, and a great blessing to^mankind, hut say in so many words,^when asked why they do not prescribe^it, that they cannot, according to their^code. Nevertheless, the world is fast becom^^ing satisfied that the cure for kidney and^liver diseases, in whatever form or con^^dition, has been discovered, an 1 there^is no doubt hut what Warner's ^afe Cure^and its fame will live long after such^bigotry as w e have instanced is dead and^buried. Thelate eminent physician and writer,^Dr. J. ti. Holland, published in ^Scrib-^ner's Monthly.'' ami showed his opinion^of such hijotry. and no doubt was satis^^fied that At antis might possibly be dis^^covered in a proprietary medicine, when^he wrote e^I.tonally, as follows: Nevertheless,it is a fact that many^of the bawl proprietary medicines of the^day were more successful than many of^the phy.-icians, and most of them, it^should Ik- remembered, were first dis^^covered or us^! in actual medical prac^^tice. When, however, any shrewd per^^son, knowing their virtue.and foreseeing^their p 'pu'.a ity. secures and advertises^them. then, in the opinion of the bigoted,^all virtue went out ot them. Savagesexpect to imbibe bravery by^drinking the blood of their brave enemies.^A more enlightened method of vitalizing^the blood is by taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla.^It braces up the nem-s and gives strength^and fortitude to endure the ills of life.
