Negotiationshave been pending for some^time past for the purchase of the O. K. A^N. mine, locaUtd a short distance trom the^Iron Mountain, in the Kiat creek district,^Missoula county. To day the deal will be^consummated which will transfer the O.^K. A -V to a company of responsible Hel^^ena men. It .V W. Johnson has held a^bond on the O. K. ^fc ^'., which he has suc^^ceeded in placing here. 'Ihe owners and^discovers ol the mine, J. M. liargrave and^C. W. 1'srk. arrived in the city yesterday^to receive the consideration tor which they^will sell the property. Thee* gentlemen^do nut desire to sell out entirely, having^much confidence in the future ot the mine.^Instead they will take a tew thousand dol^^lars in cash and the balaiiO- in shares to be^issued by the company organized to de^^velop it.
Whenthe mine was List located and Dr.^Johnson bonded it, the O. K. * ^'. showed^quantities ot native silver, and a streak ot^Uiis native silver is tisible. in the lead,^which is fully turee teel wide. When the^bond was given me shall was down fifteen^teet; now it It sixt^ Iret deep, trom which^point a ten-toot ^Toss-cut has been run.^showing a fair grade of ore all through the^eevelopuieul. samples of the brsi-ciasa^ore assayed by A. W. Hand, of this city,^ran as high as 1.5UU ounces in gold, sliver^and lead. The gentlemen who are taking^hold of the O. K. * K, are very sanguine^of developing a rich property.

FrankHall, tire original discoverer of the^Iron Mountain, is in tne city. To an I.n^^arSBMOn reporter Mr. Hall said that he^had uoiiceu ihe story going ihe rounds lhal^Uie discovery ot this promising mine was^due to r'arun-r Howe^'s son, who found a^rich looking specimen of float, and that he^I Mallj gave the lad Si ^ to direct him to the^spot ^here he found Ihe ore. The story^also stales that ihe boy was rounding up^cat He. The article was hrst published in^tn^- 1'bilipsburg Mail. Mr. Hall says he^n.il Ml lake any particular notice ui it, but^since the story is gaining general circula^^tion, he lei is lhat as a mailer of history he^should correct it. ^The truth ot the mal^^lei, said Mr. Hall, ^is thai myself and^two partners, Krazer and Jones, were pros^^pecting near r lal creek on the 24lh ot last^AugusL 1 tound a piece ot tloai at tne tool^ot the mountain, a place where 1 had^to grope my way, and no boy could get in^Ui' r^- vNfith a horse. 1 traced the float to^tin' tup ot the mountain and found a crop^pitig. 1 then returned to camp, three miles^away. 1 met Jones on the way and showed^the lli^ai to him, but be would not look at^it a aroint tune, considering it worthless.^rr*/^r thought differently, and said it^would be worth while looking for the lead.^On the following day we went around by^^priug gulch and Superior, and reaching^Klat creek on the _^^ Uiat noon and cam pea^there. We began to search and two hours^later Krs/er and 1 found the lead cropping^out. J ones and 1 then staked off a claim,^calling it the Iron Mountain, and while do^^ing this Krazer discovered auother lead^which he named the Iron Tower, upon^which most ol the development work has^been prosecuted. There wasn't a boy or^any oilier person within thirteen miles ot^r lal creek al lhal lime.
l.AKOEsTIN Tilt WOULD.
Relativeto the operations of t.i.- Bi Me^^tallic company tne l'hilipsburg Mail has^the following: ^We are luforuied lhat two^more paus and oue more settler are to be^put in at juce, and the cooling floor is to^be extended seventy-five teet. It is also^the ihteution of that wealthy company to^put btty additional stamps in motion in^course ot time, and then il will be the^largest mill ot lis kind in the world. Th^output from the mine could easily supply^this numlier now, it they had them, and it^Is thought they will be put In before the^close ot ihe present year. The large tlote^room with extra supplies of exerything for^the mill seems to be a wise precaution, and^its slock Is continually looked after by a^man whose duly it is to see that nothing is^neglected or allowed to run out ot stock.^The tire department is oue of the beat in^the territory. The men are called to their^post ot duty in case ot tire by the tap of^bell, and art- kept in training all the time^just the same as regular bre departments.

Thel'ark Mining company has paid the^balance of its bond on the mine which^Uiey have had under bond for a^year. Shaw, and Messrs. lilogley and^Comer, miners residing near Toulon. BonnersFerry, Idaho, May 26 ^^[Special correspondence of the Independ^^ent]^! am so far back on my return from^a trip to British Coiumbis, and one of tbe^most interesting excursions ever taken dur^^ing an eventful residence in the far west,^covering a period of fifteen years. To^^night a mixed crowd of people are camped^on the spot where the old trail to the upper^Kootenai, or Wild Horse placer diggings^crosses the Kootenai river. Two steamers^lie at anchor in the stream which ply be^^tween this point and the mine* on the lake^and on the outlet of the Columbia.
TheKootenai river is one of the most^beautiful and interesting in the far west.^It has its source in British Columbia, but^flows for 500 miles or more through the^I'nited States' possessions; then enter* the^British possession and empties its waters^into the Colunibia^beyond the forty-ninth^parallel.
Mytrip *o far has consumed twenty-two^days and nas been tilled with exciting and^odd scene*. The Indian and hi* family^are to be seen along the banks of the river^and shores of the lake, in their native sav^^age state^ignorance and filth. These^Kootenais appear to have no desire to im^^prove their condition, but prefer to pursue^their nomadic life. Tbe scenery along the^river is fine and presents a magnificent^view from the deck of a steamer, but it is^when tbe lake is reached that it is erand-^esL This body of water is about 100 mile*^in length and varies from 300 to 500 feet^i i width. The mountains rise sheer out of^the water and are of great height, with the^tops capped with snow. N umerous creeks^and gulches cut their way through the hills^and empty their waters into the lake.^Game ot almost every description abound,^while the carriboo^a species of the rein^^deer^are plentiful. The waters are stocked^with fish of nearly all kinds, from the^speckled trout to the immense sturgeon.^For hunting and fishing this country can^^not be surpassed on the continent and for the^searcher after thu precious metal* 1 know^of no more inviting field on the outer verge^of civilization. The ores, gold, silver, lead^and copper, have been found in several lo^^calities in large and paying quantities. The^amount of silver, lead and copper ore* be^^ing shipped out of the country tell the sto^^ry of its productiveness, and is beginning^to attract the attention of capital. To-night^Mr. Spruilie Braden of Helena, is camped^on the steamer Galena, ready to start for^the mines at 5 a. m. to-morrow. Messrs.^McCune and King, of Anaconda, are with^him.
Aboutevery steamer down the river^carries one or more representatives of capi^^tal. During my trip 1 had James F. Ward^^ner for a companion a greater portion of^the time and we had some rich and racy^experience*.
Thereare two important mining camps^in the Kootenai region^Warm Springs^i recently- changed to Ainsworth) and Nel^^son. Tbe former is on the lake and the^latter twenty miles down the outlet and^twenty-eight miles above the junction with^the Columbia. The ores of tbe Warm^springs district consist of silver and lead^found generally in large veins and of a^high grade. Tbe mints discovered so far^are in a dolomate formation. At^Nelson silver, lead, copper and gold^is found. An English company are taking^in two three and one-half toot Huntington^mills, which will be set up on a gold lead^on Cottonwood creek, six miles from Nel^^son. Quite a number of Montanians are^interested in the country, and many more^have intentions of going hither. One of the^great drawbacks to the development of the^country is the slowness of the powers that^be. Were the mines of the district on the^American i de of the boundary line things^would be far different and more life and^activity shown. In many respects their^laws governing mining claims are superior^to ours, and offer better protection to the^prospector and capitalist.
1celebrated the queen's birthday May^21, with J. C. Rykert, Jr., collector of cus^toius for the Canadian government at the^boundary line. Mr. Rykert is a son of J.^('. Ry kert, Sr.,who for thirty-five years has^been a member of the Canadian parlia^^ment. Mrs. Rykert is a daughter of Mark^Wells, a well known railroad man, brother^to the senior of the Wells-Fargo express^firm. While staying at tbe boundary 1 had^several long talks with David McLaughlin,^whom 1 wrote about in my former^communication. He showed me the Stars^and stripes sent him by Thos. McTague^of Deer Lodge. 1 also had tbe pleasure of^examinitig the notes that Mr. McL. had^written concerning the history of this^country during his residence here of nearly^a quarter of a century. Mr. McLaughlin's^wife is a Kootenai klooted and his chil^^dren, consisting of four girls and one boy^living, are of course balfbre^ds. They have^a quarter section of very fine land, and^with a little energy could be very comfort^^able. To morrow I take tbe stage road for^the Northern Pacific railway. This route^follows the route to the old trail over which^many millions of dollars worth of gold^dust was packed during the day s of placer^mining on the upper Kootenai. It was on^account of these diggings in a measure that^caused the discovery of Last Chance gulch,^where Helena now stands. So slow has^been the march of progress in this section,^that should K. L. Bonner, Eddy or^Hammond revisit the scenes that^were familiar to them in 1864, with the ex^^ception of the steamboats on the river they^would find but little change. 1 doubt much^if many of the trails are as good to-day as^they were twenty-five years ago. But the^white man is again taking possession of^this part of the northwest, and soon his in^^fluence will be felt. The untutored savage^must give way to the encroachment of civ^^ilization, and these fine bottom lands, now^the haunt of the red nomads, will blossom^as the rose under the skilful touch of the^paleface,R. H. K.
Objectto the Assignment.
Bovldek,May 31.^[Special to the Inde^^pendent,!^The stock of goods assigned to^Mr. E. Thomas by Hugo and Frieda Ham^^mer was attached this afternoon by Mar^^shall, Field ^ Co. and Marshall, Patrick *^Co., of Chicago. They, being the two^heaviest creditors, and having claims^against the Hammers for $4,300, object to^the preference shown to Mr. and Mr*.^Hammer'* relative*, and will endeavor to^break the assignment The action of Mar^^shall, Field ^ Co. was commenced in Hel^^ena, and that of Marshall, Patrick ^ Co. in^Boulder.

Other line* will do^the same. It is expected the rates to Mon^^tana points will be reduced via Omaha, the^Union Pacific authorizing the reduction to^meet the competition via SL Paul and the^Northern Pacific.

The new association^includes eighteen breweries, all in the city,^except the Letup, Anheuser-Busch and^Obert. There will be no change in the^management. The only object in forming^the association is to keep the breweries^from selling out to the English syndicate.
Rankersthe Victims.
Dim.in.May 31^John B. Lawler, man^^ager of tbe Ballymena branch of tbe Provin^^cial Bank of Ireland, and Murray, assis^^tant manager, were shot dead on the road a^short distance from Ballymena.
Itis supposed Murray shot Lawler and^then committed suicide. Tbe crime ha* no^connection with agrarian trouble*.

Chicago.May 3L^In accordance with a^previous announcement official quotations^of the board of trade will be cut off to-mor^^row from about 500 correspondents who^are non-members of the board. Arrange^^ments have been made in most instance*^by tbe commission merchant* to keep their^customers informed of the market changes^and an increased force of telegraphers will^be put on the floor to handle the business.^Employe* of the Gold ^ Stock telegraph^company were sent out this afternoon to^remove all ticker* from offices of persons^and corporations not members of the board.^Geo. M. Hurd secured an Injunction from^Judge Tuley, restricting the board of trade^and the Western I'nion Telegraph com^^panies from removing his stock quotation^tickers. Hurd has offices in St Paul and^Minneapolis and be claims to have as much^right to an injunction as if he were doing^ousines* in Chicago. He insists that^market reports are public and not private^property.
NbwYork. May 31^It waa officially^announced at the stock exchange at 3 p. m.^that no more quotations would be distrib^^uted by the stock indicators or ticker.^Quotations will be gathered on tbe floor to^^morrow, but tbe members will have to fur^^nish them to their customers by memoran^^dum as in former time*.
