Ashrewd little business woman says the^New York World, who kevps a be^uty^parlor in Twenty third street where oils,^creams, balms, lotion*, soaps, perfumes,^powders and toilet articles are offered for^sale, has this inscription over the door^leading to the cabinet: ^Trust me all or^tvtatall.^ Keen eyed and close-mouthed,^wary as only a woman of the world can be,^she brings to her profession the experience^and intellint nce of a medical career and^the refinements of ^ lsdy. For reasons of^her own she lives entirely within herself,^is known as -Madame^ by her customers,^and with the assistance of a young woman^conducts ab-isine-as which, while exclusive,^is both remunerative and respectable. ^o^man is ever seen to enU-r the place save as^a messenger or collector, aid, while any^woman can buy goods, only ^ c.^;'^5n,^^**^axe admnted to the toilet cabinet for treat^ment, and it is from these few that her in^^come is derived. She values her time at^the rate of Si an hour, but she is quick in^treating a case, clear 1b prescribing, ana in^a fifteen miuut* ta k one is often put in^possession of moat valuable hints.^^The patron is seated in an adjustable^chair and a hand glass placed on her lap.^By decrees the shade is rolled down from^the window and madaue looks her cus^^tomer over and knows the thing to be done^in an instant. A greasy, gray face is^thoroughly washed by steaming it. to open^the pores and eruptions. Blotches and^soreness of the lips ^re treated with sweet^oil and cream. li,tUtned lids are ointed.^lashes combed and clipped, eyebrows .^shaped to describe pretty curves, and^where there is a tendency to meet the^bridge of the nose is cleared of stragglinn^hairs with an electric needle. She trains^the nair to grow about the temples In t^manner most becoming to the face^^'scolding locks^ and ^ear pieces^effectually dealt with.
Apuor comploxioo is made the subject^of dietetic philosophy, and if necessary she^will make out a bill of fare which, if ad^^hered to for a year, will certainly prove^beneficial, not only to the face, but to the^general health of the body. She has grei^faith in perspiration, and advises long^walks, even in the hottest weather, with^the face heavily veiled. Kitchen work is^also prescribed. Not long ago a resident^of Kifth avenue, who pays a cook $2,000 a^year, wa ^ told to go into the kitchen and^shell peas, mix a cake, or knead bread for^an hour every day u^ freshen up her com^^plexion. Madame is an enthusiast to an^extent bordering od madness on the subject^of cleanlineaa, and argues that there is a^degree of personal neatness equally as fas^^cinating as beauty. Without actually^cleaning the hair, she will direct the work^and superintend an arrangement most^agreeable to the lines of the face, she hai^recipes for sweetening the breath and i^hundred tricks to make lovely womat^doubly attractive.
Kocinstance, any one ean manicure i^pair of bands, bat few are able to cure red^nee* of the akin and swollen veins. She^advises muscular action. Une woman Is^ordered to fan herself; a lorgnette mounted^on a rod of silver is suggested for another,^so that when not in use the too highly col^^ored members are piled on the tip of the^rod, thus forcing the blood down from the^hands; a third is told to knit incessantly,^and the writer has in mind two beautifu^women pursuing this plan whose names^are famous iu both continents. Of all the^remarkable things done by this very re^markable woman that of dressing a lady's^arms exceeds avery thing else. Some other^^wise beautiful arms are marred by a light^growth of hair, to which sleeveless bathing^suits ai d lace sleeved walking dresses^hav ^ so largely conduced. One^season of bare arms on the beach is all the^lesson a society woman needs: after that^she takes her ocean dip in loug sleeves,^silk mitts and a broad brimmed hat, But^the mischief accomplished, it is necessary^to pluck the arms before the fair creatuie^can appear in evening dress. In this oper^ation the madame is an ^ Xpert. She goes^over the arm with a pair of twe^ zers the^day of the opera, ball or carpet party, and^drawing out the darker hair from shoulder^to wrist, resorts to some delicate paste to^conceal the down that remains. Of course^this treatment has to be repeated for each^subs^ qaeut occasion, and those ladies who^go in society a great deal find the low-^neck and short sleeve bodice a very expen^sive ftsbion. These visits are kept pro^foundly sec ret and are made by appoint^ment One lady pays the madame SluO a-^year to dress her n ht arm only, the left^she does herself, and a well-known sing^^er's prt-try mouth is kept free from the^hateful shade of a dark mustache for $60.^paid in monthly chicks.
Somehalf dozen women of position and^wealth giato the parlor to have their hair^examined aud the threads of silver pulled^out or touched with bleaching tiuid. While^many of her patrons are not in a position^to keep a maid, there are more who prefer^that the s-rvants as well as the mem^^bers of their family be kept in ignorance of^the annoyance resulting from creeping^age.

Steubenville,O., special: A. U.Davids,^superintendent of the ^'.eubenville Electric^railway, had an experience yesterday with^a direct Edison current that should be an^argument for the opponents of the proposed^execution of criminals by electricity. The^electric railway is pr ivided with the^I'rague system of motors, the power being^furnished by an Edison machine of vo0^voltane. The trolley wire broke and one^end fell to the street. The electrician^being absent, Davids undertook to repair^the damage by using Insulated tools. The^plyers were dull and he had ome difficulty^in cutting the wire, but suddenly it parted^and he received ttie fall force ot the cur^^rent, which knocked him down and ren^^dered him unconscious.
Hesojii revived and was taken to his^room. ar.d beyond considerable nervous^prostration is unii jured. lie described the^shock to be the same as If he were struck^on the breast with a club, but said that^while the pain was intense for the instanr,^it lasted such a short time that it wa* gone^before he realised what had been done.^Other employes of the railway have re^^ceived muder shocks aud ail assert their^fearlessness of coming into contact with^trie ISAe-.oit current, it leaves some of^them sick at the stomach, but no serious^irj lry has resulted.
PECULIARDIVORCE CASE.
AWift Scram a Separation While Living ^^With Her Husband.
WashingtonSpecial: A suit which has^just been entered and which will come up ;^^ r trial in the equity court one of these .^days, present* what is believed to be the t^only case on record in which a divorce was j^obtained by a wife while she and her hus- i^band were living in love t^ gether, occupy- .^ing the same apartments, eating at the^same table and living, to outward appear^^ances, just as husband and wife should i^live. The parties concerned are Cleland^Lindsley and May Ann Lindsley. Cleland^was formerly an engineer in the navy and^at one time was the owner of property^worth 8100,000. j
Thebill which has been filed by Cleland^Lindsley affirms that Mary Ann was a^poor friendless girl when he married her^at the close of the civil war. but that he^loved her then and continued throughout^his married life to love her dearly. From^time to time he transferred to her piece by^piece the property which was his. One of^the reasons why he thus bestowed his^worldly possessions upon his wife was^that he knew he was in the habit of drink^^ing to excess and that his property would^be better cared for by his wife than he^could be sure of carinir for it himself. A^few yeare ago a stranger came on the^scene, a handsome young man, to board at^the house, because it was one of Mrs. .^Lindsley's whims to entertain a (warder.
MrLindsley was never an over-suspic-^gaj man. He did think that :t was hirdly^proper for his wife and the boarder to be i^in each other's apartments rather scantily^attired, or that there was room for protest^when, without consulting him, the two |^would leave town and spend se* eral weeks^together at some distant pleasure resort.^He didn't show his temper very badly, be^^cause as soon as he uttered a word of :^reproof the lady would declare that it was^very unfair to abuse the boarder in that !^way. would hint that the boarder had a ,
Sreatdeal of trouble to keep his hands off |^lr. Lindsley. and would even threaten to^sue for a divorce on the ground of Mr. j^I.indsley's intemperate habit*. Such a |^threat would invariably pacify Mr. L.nds-^ley.
Inthe summer of I*v Mrs. Lindsley^actually did sue for a divorce, but her hus- :^band appealed to her for mercy. He^aakni to give over to her whatever ot the !^property he had not already transferred to^her if she would only ^let up^ on him.
Sheagreed. The remainder of the prop^^erty was given to her, and it was under^^stood between them that the suit should i^go no further. They resumed their former^relations and continued to live together as^loving hasband and wife; but one fine^morning, not many weeks after the bar^^gain. Mr. Lindsley was furnished with a j^notice of the decree of divorce which had I^been given by the court in favor of May ,^Am. on account of the husband's intern-^peranee. May Ann had continued to pros^^ecute the suit, and she was able, owing to j^the peculiar system of administering the^law in this city to prosecute the suit to a^final issue while the defendant in the case j^wa* entirely ignorant of the proceedings.
NowCleland Lindsley sues to have the |^case reopened and to nave his property I^either restored to his own possession or^placed in the hands of trustees to be ap^^pointed by the court, and by them to b-^managed for the joint benefit of himself^and the wife whom he still loves not wit n-^standing the handsome boarder and the^occult divorce.
Ayer'sSarsaparilla, by purifying and^enriching the blood, improves the appetite,^aids the assimilative process, strengthens^the nerves and invigorates the system. It^is, therefore, the best and most thoroughly^reliable alterative that can be found for old^and young.
