HOMETESTIMONY
THEDAILY mDEPEyDEXT, HELEN A. FRIDAY MOKXIJTG. AUGUST 30,1880.
AnInnocent Young Man Convicted of^Burglary to Get Him Out^of the Way.
A filter Who Blarkaaailed a Millionaire^aaad Waa Found Oat by a High^Police Official.
Theremarkable case of George Dunning^kai been given authoritative form, la an^interview held in the MM penitentiary,^where Dunning is still confined, he himself^tells the strange story which has been cur^^rent for some time and wnich exhaustive^inquiry in Chicago appears to have con^^firmed in every detail.
Dunningis an intelligent-looking fellow^'JS years of air ^^. with a smooth, rosy com^^plexion and an appearance that might take^the fancy of almost any susceptible young^girl. He was very reticent when asked^about how he bad been railroaded to tae^peni'entiary, ostensibly lor burglary, but^really for having won the b*art of a^millionaire's daughter, and how the^millionaire had attrrwarda been black^^mailed by an editor, who learned the^facts. Mr. Dunning waa sentenced to four^years' imprisonment and baa seven months^of it yet before him. The young fe.'low,^whose fault in the millionaire a eyea seema^to have been his humble station.said that the^story regarding bis meeting ai.ti acquaint^^ance with the millionaire's daughter was a^trae one. Dunning waa a newspaper cir^^culator, handling a route on the north side^in Chicago.
Whilein the pursuit of his calling he^went to the millionaire's door early every^morning, and waa surprised alter ^t^time to learn that be had become an^obj ^t of interest to the p.utocrat's onlj^daughter, a handsome young girl just^about entering society and chafing tinde^the reatraints that had been placed up.^/i^fjer. The lovers gradually came to in-^^^about daybreak every morning for a tew^blivful moments at t:ie door of the man^aion. An inkling of the situation readied^the prospective father-in-law, and )oung^Ii.iiiuing was soon afterward called to^South Chicago ostensibly to see a gentle^man regarding hia sweetheart. While^there be was met by a per.*^n namel^frank Allen, with whom; be waa siiglil.j^acquainted.
Suddenly,as the two were stauding to^^gether, officers came up and arrested them^on a charge of burglary. Both were roi-^^Icted and sentenced for fcur years each.^A few daya later Allen's sentence was re^^duced to one year, and after Dunniug had^been taken lo the penitentiary Alien'* sen^^tence was cut down by the hocus-pocus of^a new trial, and he ci^ released after a^week in jai'. When Dunning was arrested^be was penniless and friendless, but the^girl who loved him bad sold her trinkets^and hired a young lawyer to defend him.^The millionaire, finding who was the law^^yer, bought him off, and the latter per^^suaded Dunning to plead guilty as the^only chance of saving him from aevere^sentence.
Ahint of the real facts was obtained by^the editor, who subsequently figures in the^story. The editor was at the time on the^verge of financial ruin, and instead of pub^^lishing the news, he promptly blackmailed^the millionaire. Ten thousand dollars cash^was the price of the newspaper man's^silence-^When the young unfortunate entered^Joliet prtaon. it is said, the officials were^instructed to put him at the hardest and^most trying kind of work in the peniten^tlary. Dunning was of slight build and^waa soon badly used up, had a hacking^cough and in every way presented a sickly^appearance He could hardly talk a aen-^tence without a severe fit of coughing.
Apolice official who was an enemy of^the editor and for personal reasons was^running down the latt t's part in the affair,^was horrifiel on going to tha prison, to find^the pitiable plight of Drummond. The po^^lice mogul used his influence with the of^^ficials in the penitentiary to have him re.^moved from the quarters he was then in^and lighter work given him. At this time^there had been two attempts to get Dun^^ning pardoned, but for some reason they
firovedfruitless Dunning was allowed to^anguish in prison deapite everything.^Until to-day he appeared to fear to discuss^his strange appearance, thinging it would^.Muse h ra trouble when he regains his lib^^erty. When asked what had become of the^lady, he stated that be had heard she was^engaged and would soon be married to a^Chicago man.

1was suffering from an unusually bad^^ough, my lungs were sore and congested,^and 1 consulted one of the beat physicians^in Helena, whoae prescriptions failed to^relieve me. I became alarmed, and at the^suggestion of a friend purchased a bottle of^A.cker's Krgiisb Remedy for coughs, and^after taking it according to directions was^^oropletely cured. I therefore cheerfully^recommend it.Jacob Switzkb.
Ihad a racking cough and inflamed^.hroat and bought a bottle of Acker's Eng^^lish Remedy upon the recommendation of a^friend, and was entirely cnred by it- I^consider it a never failing remedy for a
