KeepinRHpace with the raiiny Bubtrtinitml^improvement* made iu thin city durimz the^year, the dry ^ooUn houae ^^f Sands Bros^has Uken^ front rank in beautifying and^remodeling the building in whiili a heavy^trade haH beeu enjoyed during the iM^t^twenty yearn. The firm of Sauda HroH. is^known all over Montana as one of the lead^^ing dry g.K.da emporiums of the nortliweat^It ia strictly a dry goods houce which the^resident partner, Mr. Morris Sands, l.y his^keen appreciation of the deuiiiiidniind nerds^of the people of HeletiH, and 'jy honest deal^^ing and n carefully selectid stock of tin^best RooJsjpu;erasable !:^..h built up a^newt for his house ^ -olid to i^northwest.
Thehouse as it stands to-day is a u.^of beauty and the largest dry goial* store in^the (Sty.
Theold store has la-eu taken to piece^and practically renewed, w ith the exception^of the walls, and another story added to it.^The old stone front with its small grimit^arches, which shut off a goial shure of th^light, and which was a relic of the old^pioneer days, having been built in lMt^.t soon^after the Are whicii swept the street, Urn.^been taken out and replaced with liuht ami^graceful iron columns and forged grill^work, and the show windows, which are re^^cessed back from the street, are tilled with^the nneet of plate (.'lass, in two large slieet^The transoms above are tilled with stained^glass in a chaste and beautiful design^which is brilliant without bsiag gaudv
AbovetIn- kIiow w indow is a new front of^modern design built of Montniia Mm.,^one a dull buff sandstone from m ar Great^Falls, the other a beautiful blue luarbli^from the- quarries ju-il east of tin* ^ it\^These are laid in alternate courses, giving a^fine contrast and harmony of color and is^well iu keeping and character with the^whole design, which is modern ^ttonuui-^esque,^ now so much in vugtie and which^seems so well adapted to the needs of Amer^^ican architecture. While this particular^example is very plain, yet it is also vei v^rich in appearance and has a dignity of ex^pressiou rarely found in so small a struc^^ture. The proportions are pleasing and^well managed, and the di tail is rich with^^out U-iug vulgarly pretentious. The sel.-e-^tion of such a design is only another .\i^deuce of the good taste which one would^look for in so successful a dry goods nier^chant.
Insideof the store the change for the bet^ter and to modern modes of trade are still^more apparent. The upper floor, which has^been added and which is designed for the^purpose of showing to the best advantage^parts of their large st^s^k which they have^never been able to hIiow before, is leached^by means of a new pasaeiigt r elevator, ele^gant in its design and of the latest pattern^which takes one to the upper floor with no^more exertion than would be required |i^pesa into another room. In addition to^this they have an elegant stairwax. linished^in antique oak. leading to tin* appaff floor,^which is very light and cheerful and shows^off the goods kept there to great idnnllflll.^several laige skylights furnishing light in^addition to the light from the wide win^^dows at either end. They also furnish light^u^ the main lb ^or by means of glass floors^and a gallery light.
Thissecond floor whs added, the old roof^taken off; the new front put in and all the^other work which this necessitated, includ^ing the putting in of new thsir beams, to^carry the story of this new building, all^without interfering with the usual trade in^the store and with very little interruption^or diminution of the large trade which this^firm enjovs.
Allthese improvements were1 designed^and tha successful completion of the Work^supervised by the well known architects,^Messrs. Shallei iV Head.
Besidesthe extensive improvements exe^cnted by the architect, the artist has en^^hanced the at t ract ivWMM of the establish^iin-nt in a pleasant and marked degivi^Handsome mouldings and borders set off a^pale blue ceiling and walls, the design be^ing ts-rfectly harmonious.
Whileall these improvements have been^made the stock of giants has not been over^^looked. The fall and w inter supply is dailv^arriving and being placed on exhibition.^When tlie store was visited yesterday it was^crowded with people in the dry goods de^^partment, while the polite attendants ill the^cloak and cariict depart uieiitx on the second^floor, had all they could do to attend to the^customers there. Mr. Morris Sands was^constantly engaged in receiving and show^^ing the many ladies to the different depart^meals and receiving the congratulations of^all upon the beauty of the new store.
Themain floor is divided into live de-^pniiu^nt*. To the right as you enter is the^notion, ho.: -ry ami corset department, in^charge of Martin Doty, a eotirteoiis voung^man who understands Ins business.
Abovethis is the ladies' and children's^underwear department, where Mr. Kenton^looks after the patrons. Harry Sheehan.^who is a great favorite among the ImUm,^c ii la- found in almost any part of the store^where he is needed, though he has sole^charge of the carpet department. In the^dress goods and silk department, situated^to the left of the entrance, Jesse Stoner and^W. H. Huuna preside. The atork of dress
Soodsjust received has many new and novel^esigus never liefore seen in Helena, uud^this department was the center of attrac^^tion for the ladies yesterday.
Belowthe dress gisals department comes^the flannel department in charge of Mr.^beslie, the domestics iu charge of Mr. Feu-^ton. In the center of the spacious store,^and what was formerly the rear, is located^the cashier's and wrapping department in^charge of Miss Hattie Kider. To the ex^treme rear is the counting room, finished in^antique oak.
Ascc-ndingthe elevator to the new second^floor an immense room over 100 feet deep is^^MB, This is well lighted and filled with car^^pets of every descript ion iieiitly arranged, and^tapestries of every price and description.^Half of the floor is devoted to the cloak de-
Sirtment,in charge of P. J. Shellhoni.^ere cloaks, seal garments, plush new^markets in endless variety are^^een, as well as novelties^in jackets und shawls. Laoe curtains in^abundance are also to lie seen here, some of^which are very expensive and elegant. In^the Iwsement is an immense stock of wall^paper, blankets, linoleums and rinmIs of^description, the place being filled^with all it can hold.
Theimprovements t.. the building have^just been completed, and the elegant stock^^.f gisals has not half been dispiaved. but^for tha next three days the oof us' of em^^ployes will be engaKeJ inU)t Z^grand opeuing which will begin Wedues-

Membersof the Salvation Army do not^fraternize like soldiers of the ernes as they^should. Captain Keefe is the disturbing ele^uient. Some time ago (^apt. Kanisdale came^from t he Pacific coast department bearing;^a comiuissiou superseding Cupt. Keefe at^this station. Capt. Keefe retired from ac^^tive work but refused to go *^' Portland,^Ore., where she was ordered, and she re^^mains in Helena a thorn in the sides of the^members of the barracks at this place.^During Capt. Keef. 's command of the Hel^^ena forces she made iiianv friends who stil^stick to her. Of course, in the long. run.^she will be tried for insubordination and de^^graded to the ranks, but just now her craft^carries a black, black flaj. She dws not^ask for quarter nor will she give any. She^created a sensation Thursday night last by^making a thrilling speech in which she said^she would yet have her rights, for Brig.-(ten.^Fielding would be here and settle matters^satisfactorily to her.
