One of tin1 most ititereftirig accounts

Fair Onkn, near Ivichniunil, is given in a

went whizzing through the air, over the
heads of our own men, ripht into the
midst of the enemy, and there exploded,
scattering death through their ranks.
On the lefl, the rebels were seen coming
through the woods to flank us. and wheel

The destruction was horrible. Our
spherical ease shot are awful missiles,

tiled by a fuse the same as a shell. The

its way throuuh musses of men, and then

exact rangn ol every part of tho fioli,
every shot told with fi iglitf'ul ellect. Hut
tlie enemy were not at all daunted.
They marched steadily on, and hailed a
perfect tempest of balls upon us. Why
we, as well as our horses, were not every

hail, however, but kept pouring our case
shot into the dense masses of the foe, who
came in prodigious and ovcrivhclminr;
force. And thev fought splendidly, too.
Our shot tore their ranis wide open, and
eliattere.l them asunder iu a manner that
was frightful to witness; but they closed
up again at once, and came on as steadily
as English vclr ins.
When tiny got within four hundred
yards we closed our case-shot and opened
on them wiih caniBter, and such destruc

each discharge great gaps were made in
their ranks indeed, wholo companies
went down before that murderous Jirc ;
but they closed up with an order and

Seemed to be animated with the courage
of despair blended with the bono of a
speedy victory if they could by an over

It was awful to sou their ranks turn
anil shattered by every discharge of can
ister that we poured into their faces, and
while their dead and dying lay in piles,
they closed up, anil slijl kept advancing
right in the face of that tire. At one
time threo lines, one behind another, were
steadily advancing, and three of their
(lags were brought in range of our guns
shotted with canister.
"Vic" shouted the gunner, and down
weui those threo lings, anil a gap was
opened through those three lines as if a

never halting or wavering, right through
the woods, over the fence, through the

everything before them, captured every

When we delivered our last fire, they
were winiin fifteen or twenty paces of
us, and us allur horses had been killed
or wounded, we could not carry oil' a gun.
Our whole division was cut to pieces,
with what loss 1 do nut know. We fell
back to a second lino of entrenchments,
aud there held the enemy in check till
reinforcements arrived, and then we kept
our position till night put an end to the
bat lie.

Mr. John Smith, sixty years of age,
residing in Van Ilurcn county, Arkansas,
and eighty-threo of his neighbors, were
last November driven in chains to Little
Hock, Ark., and there confined in a filthy
dungeon until February 1st. They wrre
chained together in the following man
ner: A plough-chain was fastened, one
end about the neck of one man, a lashing
being used to clasp it, and the other end
was fastened around the neck of his com
panion iu a similar manner; aud when
the couples were t'lut fastened, another
chain was fastened across from chain to
chain, anil thus all the men were hitched
together by fours. In his afVulavit, Mr.
Smith says:
'.Several (if the men were old men, near
my age. The same day wo were chained
we were started for l.itllo Hock, between
ninety and onn hundred miles distant
from Clinton. We were rursed and
abused along the road. Homo of us
w ould pet tired, and when one out of any
of the force could not march, ho and his
threo companions would be placed in a
wagon and allowed to ride a distance.
Once the wagon turned over with four in
chained by the neck as I have stated, and
one of them now is crippled. We finally
ari'iv d at Little Ihick, and at the jail
door our chains were taken off iu public.
There w as a great crowd there rejoicing
over us, men, women and children, anil
even the cursed littlo niggers. The crimo
we were guilty of is simply that wo wero
Union men, nnd in favor of the Constitu
tion nnd the laws of the United States.
When the rest were put iu jail we were
put in cells, aud fed on beef and bread.
It wash lousy, filthy place, so that wo
were covered with vermin. From tho
cells wo were taken to tin Slate House,
and examined by Oovrrnor Hector. Ilo
asked mo if 1 w as willing to volunteer.
I told him I would not, because 1 was too
old, and it was against my principles.
The Governor then asked me if I was
willing my son hould volunteer. I told
him my son was of nge, lie could do as
he pleased. e
1 was sent to jail, where I staid until I
was released, February 1st, 1802. My
son volunteerod, aud was seut right off
to Howling Oreen. Seventeen out of tho
twenty-seven prisoners volunteered, and
the balance remained io jail until releas
ed, except ono, who died in prison.
We were released by the Confederate
Judge Ilingo, no bill of treason having
been found against uh. i arrived at homo
safe, and have been a Union man ever
since.

Tho I'liiladelphia Pre says :
The wholo nominal circulation of U.
S. Notes at this time is only one hundred
and seventeen millions five hundred
thousand dollars. There are in th
Treasury, to the credit of disbursing
ollicers, about thirty-two millions, leav
ing about half a million with which to
meet drafts from the depaitment. Of the
one hundred and seventeen millions,
about fifty-seven millions, bring the
amount of the demand notes, are prac
tically withdrawn from circulation, and
hoarded for tho payment of customs. Of
the proposed new issue, therefore, fifty
seven millions may replace the amount
thus hoarded, and about forty millions
w ill be withhold from issue to meet pos
sible demands for temporary deposits
beyond immediate means. Thus ninety-seven
millions will make no practical
addition to tho circulation.
It is well understood, also, that the
Secretary will, in no event, issue any
part of tho new notes, if authorized, ex
cept small notes to take the place of the
largo in tho payments to soldiers and
tl.ee o.o.lltora nreferrine them. So lonif
as the duties on imports, tbn incrcaso of
tlie temporary loan, and the conversion
of I mled States notes already issued
into live-twenty par bonds, yield revenue
enough to meet the daily expenditures.
During the present week, thus far, the
income from these sources has morn than
met the current expenses. Tlie conver
sions alone have supplied more than half
a million of dollars a day, and w ill pro
bably increase.
Under these circumstances, very little
use will be made at the additional ail
tbority proposed to be given to the Sec
rotary, though it i thought prudent to
guard against possible exigencies by
giving it.

The Provision Question lit 4h South.
W'e havo recently conversed with an
intelligent gentleman who resided in the
South, and as late as the middle of last
month was intimately connected with
the Commissary IVnartmcnt oT a portion
of IU'auregard'a army on the Mississippi
river. This gentleman is a Northern man
by birth, and was forced into the service
of the Confederafe States by circum
stances which ho could not control,
and which Involved tho loss of his entire
property in the South. Ilo confirms, in
the strongest manner, the report, con
cerning the alleged scarcity of provisions
in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and
Louisiana. Tho Southern army were toler
ably well supplied until the fall of lonel
goa and the lots of Nashville, the latter
place being the chief reliance of the
whole Confederacy west of tho seaboard
States, for provisions. Tho scarcity of
provisions has increased ever since that
event. Tin. next additional pressure oc
curred when the Cou federates l.eard of
the capture of New Orleans, and tho
steady urogress of the gunboats up tho
Mississippi. The Ked liiver country and
Arkansas wero hereby cut oil", and the
price of provisions enhanced immediately.
Our informant was at Fort 1'illow early
in May, when orders came from (Jenural
Heauregard to send to Corinth all the
provisions at Fort 1'illow, excepting
euougti for ten days rations. The olli
cers were expected to supply themselves
by other means, lho contcdcracy had
agents scouring the country in every di
rection for bet f cattle, bacon, and olhei'
supplies, but their success was generally
poor.
liebel sympathizers have managed Tor
many months to send to the ret.il army
small lots of provisions in wagons, from
Kentucky and Middle lenncssee, where
loud is comparatively abundant. Tho
Southern Generals have at all times man
aged to find small amounts of specie, to
be used for purchasing supplies ouisido
of their military lines, and to pay the
expenses ot smuggling these stocks
throiioh the country konlb ward.
a ue scarcity ot lorago has compelled
Beauregard to dispense almost eu ircly
with, cavalry.. Vhtt lUaui.'ser!-! risi. -I
Corinth the short supply of provisions
was admitted in Memphis, and every ex
ertion made to increase tho stock.
The lack of food is also seriously
complained of hi tlm Mouth. In tho (Julf
Stales, notwithstanding the most strenu
ous exertions to plant grain and dispense
with cotton, many planter havo put In
half cottou and half grain. The cotton
soil doe not sot m lo grow grain success
fully, and, according to our informant,
the grain yield will bo very small. In
oino localities accounted among the best,
ihe gram yield will ho less than five
bushels to tho acre. Wo hardly need
thiu testimony to convince loyal reader
af the iutenso suffering for food likely to
prevail in tho South this summer. Tho
starvation reported in the vicinity of Cor
inth, tv relieve which our citizens are
now pouring out money and provisions
so liberally, is an iudication ot what we
may expect to hud in many districts
which will fall within tho Union lines
w ithin a short time. This state of des
titution must exercise an important in
fluence on tho final termination of tin.
rebellion. After a wbilu the people will
see starvation, as well as the military
superiority ot the Government, staring
tbeiu in tho face, and their common sense
Will soon teach them the folly of longer
