We learn that the marauding ). anils
are committing gnat depredation upon
not only Union men but eecc sRioiiitn, in
the interior counties. Their sole object
is stealing. When a secessionist plead
thai he is for the Confederacy, they tell
lii in " Damn tho Southern Confederacy
wp want your horses, or yonr nioiuj-, or
clothing." What a shocking slate of
a Hairs.

- A gentleman informs us that General
Hardee crossed the liido on the Tor road
fifteen miles above Chattanooga a few
days ago with three regiments of infant
ry, one of cavalry, and forty pieces of
artillery, lie also utatcs as an undoubt
ed fat that Ocneral Brags hung eiRht
Union men recently. The rebels make
war; they recognirt the present folate
ofallairs, as being war, and war only.
When will we learn the same fact. ? We
do not advise the Government i imitate
Itragg's barbarity, but we do ttrge it to
put a stop to its olliccrs hedging rebel
property with safeguards. Safeguards
are emphatically "played out."

It is strange that intelligent jteoplo
will go to the trouble of professinpj to
communicate facts to editors anony
mously. Wo frequently get such letiors,
anil we must again sny what we have
often saitl before, that all such letters
are iilWrlu vnihu'H-i, and their writers
waste both their t.iino and paper. We
don't know whether you are telling the
truth or not. You may be a huiuliuger.
You may be loyal or you may be a rebel.
Whenever a writer wishes his name kept
secret, we will do so; but it you are
afraid to let us have your name, then
don't bother us, for we shall certainly
not father your articles. Don't forget
this.

These people arc native Tennesseans,

have sacrificed the honest accumulations

The war meeting this afternoon was
an immense affair. All stores were closed
affotir o'clock, hr proclamation of the
Mayor, who presided at the meeting.
Speeches were made by General Curtis,
Walbridgc, McC'learnand, aud Ex-Governor
ltandall and Senator TrnmbulJ.
In the evening Gen. Walbridgc ad
dressed the Hoard of Trade at length.
1U urged the neeessily of putting; the
country in a complete position of defence
against domestic treason and foreign in
tervention. Ilo urged that thn facilities
between I he cast and west should be
multiplied, not only for commercial pur
poses but as a military necessity, and
that, by the agency of our breadstuil's,
he should always command the sympa
thy of the great masses in Europe, and
that our tiuancial credit abroad was sus
tained by ttiis act, and acknowledged
demand for our breadstuir.
Gen. Walbridgc was listened to with
marked attention, and when he announc
ed that corn was king, the applauso was
deafening.

Washington, .Sept. tl. Farmers from
the upper part of -Montgomery county,
Md., arriving here early to-day, report
heavy tiring heard late yesterday in the
direction of Nolan's Ferry; they also con
firm tho rumor that the rebels yesterday
crossed the river, this sitlo of Point ot
Hocks, they did not venture any consid
erable distance fiom the river. The force
eonnisted of a battalion of cavalry and
four pieces of artillery; after remaining
a short time they re-crob.srd.
There is no doubt the rebels, in strong
force are pouted at several points on tho
opposite shores. Considerable, bodies of
rebel infantry were plainly visible from
this side during the day, and the camp
tires at night, indicated tho presence of a
larger force or rebels than at List sup- ;
posed. Mr. Tierce, tho General Soperin- j
tedeiit of the hospital corps of male

will be enlisted lor Ixw-pital services.
The large number of cit.en nurses who
