The most powerful protection to the
wealthy is pure republicanism, for pro
perty will always be protected, and
respected, while the avenues toils pos
session are thrown open to all alike, since
all men will readily defend that in which
they have a common interest.
Unless the possession of property
sharpens and ciirichcH a man's intellect,
and improves his heart, wo know not why
ti should give him more political power
than the man w ho has none. l'nt so far
from producing these good cll'ects, it often
has one directly the reverse: therefore, it
va plain that a political aristocracy of
wealth ouivht never to be tolerated.

This is not the first time that 1'aneuil

you, fellow citizens, came here this morn

a brave and patriotic citien, who had
died, as wo might all be proud to die,

Since closing and dispatching tny let
ter this morning, I am satisfied that the
estimate of theeneniy's loss widt h 1 gave
is too small. A "visit to that portion of
the Held where Hooker s corps were en-
uaired, and particularly along the route
fought by (.iibson'f brigade, of King's
division, on tlie turnpike, reveals a car
naue ol which I had previously no con
ecption. The enemy's dead are piled
everywhere along the road line, and in
the woods on each side of it. In fact,
the slaughter on the right was fearful,
and exceeded, if possible, '.that upon the
left of the battle lield. 2 he Cviifokmtrs
must have, left full anc Ihimsiiiul ilcml on Hie
Held! Their swollen carcases liorril y one
at the foot of every tree, and behind every
shrub and bush.
Our own dead which have been gath
ered on the right for burial only count up
seventy-live. I am wholly at a loss to
accouut for the great disparity in the
numbers of the Union and rebels troops
killed on this Held. Our grape and
shrapnel must have told frightfully in
this work of (daughter. Some of the of
ficers of the rebel army say they have
lost as many in killed, almost, as they
did at the battle ol Ma hern Hills. Our
dead will not exceed, probably, one bun
dred and lifty, but our wounded, Who
have been brought from the lield to this
town, now amount to near ono (hi .sand.
All tlie churches, and several barns are
full of them. Many are now in private
houses. No lists have been taken of the
wounded except at the seminary and
small church of United P.rothreti where
the Pennsylvania lieserves and some New
York troops have been brought. This
hospital is in charge of Dr. L. W. Head,
Surgeon of the First Pennsylvania l.'e
serve corps.
There are a great many serious woands,
and many must dieol' their wounds.
Maryland.
The Philadelphia Hnllt'tiii says truly
that the people of Maryland have been
maligned and misrepresented. The
would-be. aristocrats of Baltimore, who
talk and act treason, have been regard
ed as representing the people of Mary
land how falsely, late events have
shown. The darling hope of the rebel
leaders was that, on passing the Potomac,
they w ould be received with joy by the
people ; that there would bo a general
uprising; that all the men would Hock
to their standard ; that llaltimore would
fall easily into their hands ; that Wash
ington would come next j and that then
Pennsylvania could be invaded, and that
they could "dictate a peace in Independ
ence .S(uarc."
lint Maryland has stood firm. A few
foolish men and women welcomed the
rebels, and a very few men joined their
ranks. But the masses received them
coldly; they witnessed their departure
from their town w ith tpiiet delight, and
they welcomed MeClellan and P.urnsido
as their deliverers, with shouts ami tears
ot joy. IWen lialtimore has not shown
a simi of revolt, and the so cessionis!.-
...ere have actually looked with dread
upon the possible arrival of a rebel army
in their vicinity. in no pan 01 me
I'niou i there probably more sincere joy
at the departure of the rebels over the
Potomac than in Maryland.
The firm and steady loyalty of Mary
land has been eipial to a severe defeat to
the rebels. It has, indeed, aided Me
Clellan in giving them the terrible defeats
they have sutlcrrcd. It puts a linal ex
litiiniisher upon the idea, so industrious
ly circulated at the .South and in Kurope,
that Maryland was at heart devoted to
the cotton States. After this deplorable
failure, there will never be a new attempt
to invade Maryland. The war will
lieiiei lui lh he carried on South of Iho
Potomac. Let us all do honor to Mary
land for her loyally, to her noble Gover
nor and ex-Governor fur their fidelity.

Owing to a thick mist w hich hung over
the mountains, the artillerisis failed to
see the white flags for some lime after
they were displayed, and continued
throwing shell, whereby six were killed.
Colonel Miles was fatally wounded by
one of them. He had ridden back and

but fortunately met with no mishap until
then. While standing with his Aid-de-Camp,
Lieutenant Penning, on the left of
